Mini LED: The Beauty of The Moving Image

The term "Mini LED" is used to describe the latest technology in TV displays that uses a smaller LED chip to produce the same brightness as a larger chip.

This miniaturized design allows for finer control of lighting levels, which makes it ideal for use in both home and commercial lighting applications.

The smaller size of the chip allows for a higher density of LEDs, which increases the amount of light produced by each unit. This also allows manufacturers to reduce costs by reducing the amount of material used in their manufacturing.

The Mini-LED chip is also ideal for use in small, portable devices such as laptops or mobile phones, where space is at a premium. The technology allows manufacturers to make their products thinner and lighter than ever before, which makes them more attractive to consumers.

Mini LED is also ideal for use in outdoor applications such as streetlights and security lighting. Because the LED chip can be produced at a higher density, it provides brighter illumination with less power consumption than traditional lighting technologies.

Mini LED vs. OLED – A Tale of Two Technologies

Let's get into the nitty-gritty of what makes Mini LED different from OLED and why it's great.

First, the Mini LED is not OLED. While both use organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) to power their displays, they differ in how they produce colour on that display—and as we all know, colour is everything when it comes to TVs. OLEDs create each pixel by firing a single red or green or blue diode, which means that any pixel can only be one colour at a time—so if you want an image with a white background and black lettering, for example, you'd need multiple pixels in the same area (or "subpixel").

Mini LED uses many smaller diodes—each one pumping out lots of different colours instead of just one—to make up every subpixel individually! This lets us create images with more vivid colours than ever before (with no murkiness).

OLED is an emissive technology, while Mini LED is a transmissive technology. This means that OLED screens emit light and have a wider viewing angle than Mini LED displays, which need to be viewed straight on to see the picture clearly. OLED has a higher contrast ratio than Mini LED with similar brightness levels, and it also boasts faster response times for fast-moving action scenes or video games where you need to react quickly.

However, OLED has poorer black uniformity (black outlines around objects on screen) compared to Mini LED displays and it cannot display as deep blacks as those found in home theatre projectors, which use an entirely different projection technology altogether (DLP).

Local Dimming Technology

Local dimming technology is a display technology that allows the darkening of specific areas of the screen to create contrast and more natural images. It can be used in both LCD and OLED displays, and there are two types of local dimming technologies: edge-lit and back-lit. Back-lit local dimming occurs when the backlight is divided into a number of selectively controllable zones that can be independently turned on and off.

Edge-lit local dimming occurs when LEDs along the edges are controlled individually to allow for very precise control over how much light reaches each part of the display panel.

ASUS South Africa Launches the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM Gaming Monitor in South Africa @ASUS_za

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) South Africa announced that the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM gaming monitor is now available in South Africa. The 27" QHD ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM features a blazing 240 Hz refresh rate, rapid 0.03ms (GTG) response time and better heat management for immersive gaming

Faster-than-fast game-changing displays

The ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM is the first ROG 1440p OLED gaming monitor with a superfast 240 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms response time. It comes with an anti-glare micro-texture coating to reduce reflections for a better viewing experience in all lighting conditions, and it offers 1,000 nits peak brightness.

The thermal design of the cooling system has been greatly improved to help reduce burn-in. It has a custom heatsink and a new internal layout to improve cooling. Internal airflow has been optimized and the top air vents are larger for improved heat dissipation. Heat is dissipated more evenly across the rear of the monitor. The average temperature is 5% lower compared to other 27-inch OLED gaming monitors, yet this panel has 17% higher peak brightness than the previous ROG OLED display.

Intelligent voltage optimization ensures consistent luminance for each pixel by controlling the amount of voltage applied to it. ROG worked closely with the panel maker to determine the correlation between OLED brightness, voltage level, and operational temperature. A smart algorithm coded for the panel optimizes voltage based on temperature changes to ensure consistent brightness across the panel.

The ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM also comes with Uniform Brightness, which keeps the illuminance level even when white windows change dramatically. Plus, the new DisplayWidget Center software makes it easy to use a mouse to change system functions and OLED settings via an intuitive interface.

Lenovo has today announced that its latest technology breakthrough, the ThinkPad X1 Fold PC is soon landing in South Africa. The launch builds on Lenovo’s extensive history of evolving its ThinkPad sub-brand, leveraging the latest in foldable technology and connectivity to meet the requirements of agile working and staying connected while on the go.

Durable Design

The ThinkPad X1 reimagines the possibilities of mobile computing, by shifting from its compact and foldable form into a crisp 13.3-inch OLED display – weighing in at less than 1 kilogram. Constructed from lightweight alloys and carbon fibre, the X1 Fold offers both portability and durability, while its leather folio cover provides a premium look.

With more than four years of research and development behind the PC, the ThinkPad X1 Fold builds on the reliability and performance ThinkPad devices are synonymous with. The X1 Fold features multi-layer frames to support and protect the display, while a unique multi-link torque hinge mechanism ensures the smoothest folding experience. The OLED display has also undergone extensive performance and durability testing, ranging from ball dropping, to pen tapping and dynamic stress tests.

Seamless Performance

Co-engineered with Intel, the X1 Fold features an Always Connected PC, powered by Intel Core Processors with Intel Hybrid Technology. Users requiring additional speed and connectivity can also opt for a 5G-enabled version of the device.

For ease of use, the ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with unique mode-switching software, designed specifically for Windows 10. This technology enables the PC to seamlessly adapt to multiple use cases, depending on user preferences and their surrounding environment.

Multiple Modes

As an ultra-versatile device, the ThinkPad X1 Fold enables users to leverage two independent displays to optimize efficiency. Scenarios may include participating in a video call using the upper screen while taking notes or editing a presentation on the lower screen. Use cases include the flexibility to operate the X1 Fold in either portrait or landscape mode for added convenience.

When used in landscape mode, the integrated kickstand within the leather folio cover ensures optimal viewing angles. The X1 Fold comes with a Bluetooth Mini Fold Keyboard – a slim accessory that can be wirelessly charged inside the system and secured using magnets. For faster note-taking, signing of documentation and creative brainstorms, users can harness the Active Pen.

As mentioned in my earlier post about the Xiaomi products, they are not only innovative but also value for money. It goes for all the products, I have seen or used till date. The product which people fell in love with was the first Mi Band which gave a possibility to measure your steps at the cheapest price linked to your smartphone via an app and then when the second Mi Band 2 came with Heart Rate monitoring, it was an instant hit. I remember not getting it on Amazon.in when I tried to order for the same. It was always out of stock and same is the case with the new version of the device called Mi Band 3.

GearBest was able to send me the Mi Band 2 fast enough but the custom took some time to clear in South Africa but finally the band reached me within a week and I started using the same immediately. It's definitely one of the online stores which can give competition to the likes of Alibaba, Amazon, takealot.com, Flipkart and many others around the world. The device packaging consists of a silicone band, a charger base and the main unit itself. The main unit can be easily clipped into the silicon band after charged from the charging base. The charging base is USB and can be inserted into your laptop or any of the smartphone chargers.

The main features of the Smartband are Bluetooth 4.0 which help to connect to the smartphone apps immediately and pushes the data collected to the app. The OLED 0.46 inch touch screen displays time, distance, calories, and heart rate with a single gentle touch on the circular button.

Heart Rate monitoring now is far more advanced with accurate measurements which can be tracked to check the kind of exercises routine you can follow. Also, the Mi Band 2 measures your sleep and also gives you the notification if you have been sitting on your desk for long without any movement. It helps you to relax your body and also complete your daily goal of 7000 steps.

The overall weight of the device is less than 20 grams and you won't even fell the Smartband to be on your wrists. The device is powered with Li-Polymer battery capacity of 70mAh which will last you for at least 5 days and with notifications switched ON it will be around 3 days. The company claims a standby time of 20 days. The device can be charged fully in around 3 hours.

The biggest problem I faced with Silicon bands in Fitbit is that they start itching on my hand wrist after a while. This was not the case with this one but over time, you might face some itching. 

Buy the device from here. Currently, my 10 years old daughter is really enjoying this smart band and soon I am sure she will want to have a colored screen smartwatch and by that time Xiaomi will definitely bring something new to the market! Till that time...

The Future of Television @LGSouthAfrica #OLED

Television is evolving right alongside tablets and smartphones. The innovative televisions of today are built with connectivity at their heart. These TVs are tapping into the endless possibilities offered by the ‘Internet of Things’, by converging all of your technologies into one place. Smart TVs allow you to access the internet and smartphone from the comfort of your own couch.

Similar to Moore’s law is Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns, which states that the capabilities of technology accelerate exponentially. The law can be clearly observed in the evolution of TV technology. TV in the 1970s was almost identical to TV in the 1950s, differentiated only by the presence of colour. Likewise, TV in the 1990s closely mirrored TV in the 1970s, being primarily distinguished by the addition of VCRs, cable, and video gaming systems as common accessories.

Looking at the slow lurch of technological progress in the latter half of the 20th century, and it is apparent that the pace of change has been dwarfed by the improvements made in the past 15 years alone. The catalyst for these changes began once manufacturers were no longer shackled by the limitations of cathode ray tubes. No longer reliant on bulky tubes, the capabilities of TVs began to grow exponentially. Picture quality drastically improved, screens grew in size and production became more cost-efficient. For the first time, TVs were able to offer with more colors, smaller bezels, and thinner casings.

It’s hard to imagine where television can go from here, but it’s clear that manufacturers are continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible. LG Electronics, market leaders in consumer electronics unveiled a paper thin OLED television prototype that can be rolled up. Just as cathode ray tubes represented the turning point in television design, the unrivalled picture quality of OLED represents a similar turning point for TV innovation. OLED may prove to be the spark which causes TV technology to explode at an ever increasing rate.

OLED’s superior picture quality and flexibility make it the perfect display format for the next generation of smart devices. From form-fitting wearables and rollable TVs to smart automotive displays and bending mobile phones, OLED technology has the potential to turn sci-fi concepts into reality. The technology that powers OLED continues to improve with each passing day, meaning that the OLED era is even closer than you think.

2016 is set to be a banner year for OLED technology. A strong showing at CES 2016 allowed OLED to establish itself as the leading format for the next generation of televisions. LG’s OLED line won recognition at CES and found its way on to many best-in-show lists. Fortune stated that OLED “has been the best of the best in the television world for the past few years – and it’s not slowing down this year.

This rise in quality of television content has ushered in what critics have called, “The Golden Age of Television”. Critically-acclaimed shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad have convinced viewers across the world that what’s on in their living room is just as exciting as whatever’s showing at the theatre.

Who needs to visit the cinema when today’s Ultra HD TVs and OLEDs can offer comparable levels of quality? Why bother owning a separate stereo system when sound bars take up so much less space and sound just as good? The times are coming where your every breathe will achieve the state of Entertainment Nirvana!
