Television is evolving right alongside tablets and smartphones. The innovative televisions of today are built with connectivity at their heart. These TVs are tapping into the endless possibilities offered by the ‘Internet of Things’, by converging all of your technologies into one place. Similar to Moore’s law is Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns, which states that the capabilities of technology accelerate exponentially. The law can be clearly observed in the evolution of TV technology. TV in the 1970s was almost identical to TV in the 1950s, differentiated only by the presence of colour. Likewise, TV in the 1990s closely mirrored TV in the 1970s, being primarily distinguished by the addition of VCRs, cable, and video gaming systems as common accessories.

Looking at the slow lurch of technological progress in the latter half of the 20th century, and it is apparent that the pace of change has been dwarfed by the improvements made in the past 15 years alone. The catalyst for these changes began once manufacturers were no longer shackled by the limitations of cathode ray tubes. No longer reliant on bulky tubes, the capabilities of TVs began to grow exponentially. Picture quality drastically improved, screens grew in size and production became more cost-efficient. For the first time, TVs were able to offer with more colors, smaller bezels, and thinner casings.

It’s hard to imagine where television can go from here, but it’s clear that manufacturers are continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible. LG Electronics, market leaders in consumer electronics unveiled a paper thin OLED television prototype that can be rolled up. Just as cathode ray tubes represented the turning point in television design, the unrivalled picture quality of OLED represents a similar turning point for TV innovation. OLED may prove to be the spark which causes TV technology to explode at an ever increasing rate.

OLED’s superior picture quality and flexibility make it the perfect display format for the next generation of smart devices. From form-fitting wearables and rollable TVs to smart automotive displays and bending mobile phones, OLED technology has the potential to turn sci-fi concepts into reality. The technology that powers OLED continues to improve with each passing day, meaning that the OLED era is even closer than you think.

2016 is set to be a banner year for OLED technology. A strong showing at CES 2016 allowed OLED to establish itself as the leading format for the next generation of televisions. LG’s OLED line won recognition at CES and found its way on to many best-in-show lists. Fortune stated that OLED “has been the best of the best in the television world for the past few years – and it’s not slowing down this year.

This rise in quality of television content has ushered in what critics have called, “The Golden Age of Television”. Critically-acclaimed shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad have convinced viewers across the world that what’s on in their living room is just as exciting as whatever’s showing at the theatre.

Who needs to visit the cinema when today’s Ultra HD TVs and OLEDs can offer comparable levels of quality? Why bother owning a separate stereo system when sound bars take up so much less space and sound just as good? The times are coming where your every breathe will achieve the state of Entertainment Nirvana!

Acer TravelMate P648 - Commercial Notebook #CES2016 @AcerAfrica

Acer recently announced the TravelMate P648 series commercial notebooks at CES 2016, which runs on Windows 10, boasts powerful Intel® 6th generation Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors, industry-leading tri-band 802.11ad wireless, and Thunderbolt™ 3 for ultra-fast data transfer and 4K displays support. Combining a durable, ultra-slim chassis and speedy wireless technology, these notebooks are the ideal traveling companion for even the most active road warriors. 

This new series builds upon the Acer TravelMate P645, which earned Red Dot Awards in both 2015 and 2014, and an iF product design award in 2014. The powerful processors translate to faster wireless processing, long battery life of up to 8 hours, vivid, clear visuals and fast video conversion.

Light Yet Durable Traveling Companion

The Acer TravelMate P648 is built to withstand the rigors of frequent travel. A high-strength carbon and glass fiber lid is light, yet strong, while the system weighs only 3.5 pounds (1.7 kg) and measures just 0.83 inches (2.12 cm) thin. The palm rest and bottom cover are made from magnesium-aluminum, allowing the notebook to handle extreme pressure and protect it from drops. To maintain its high performance, a fan keeps the system cool and Dust Defender technology safeguards it from dust. A full-sized chiclet keyboard provides comfortable typing with 1.4mm travel distance, and a spill-resistant design safeguards the keyboard from accidental spills. The keys are LED-backlit, so they can be seen in dimly-lit environments, such as red-eye flights.

Industry’s First Notebook With Tri-Band 802.11ad Wireless

Featuring the latest tri-band 802.11ad wireless technology from Qualcomm®, the TravelMate P648 can utilize the 60GHz band wireless spectrum to deliver speeds up to 4.6Gbps, which is up to 10 times faster than 802.11ac. The tri-band solution supports 802.11ac in parallel, for longer range data transfers in larger spaces, as 802.11ad is ideal for short range, high volume data transfers which works best in smaller spaces. With less latency, 802.11ad can reduce the time delay of projecting wireless content from the notebook to a mere 30 milliseconds.

Ideal Office Mate

The TravelMate P648 is ideal for travel as well as life at the office. In addition to a card reader and HDMI for connecting to an external display, it’s conveniently outfitted with a super-fast Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3.1 Type-C) port and three USB 3.0 ports with one supporting power-off charging. The optional Acer ProDock features a full gamut of ports for connecting a vast array of digital devices and peripherals, including two USB 3.0, DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, VGA, and Gigabit Ethernet.

The new Acer TravelMate P648 models were designed to fulfill the rigorous requirements of commercial customers with 14-inch displays, offering choices up to Full HD with IPS technology and up to NVIDIA® GeForce® 940M graphics with 2GB VRAM. They also boast 4GB DDR4 memory upgradable to 20GB and ample storage space with up to 1TB hard drives or up to 512GB solid state drives (SSD). Optional RAID 0 SSD configurations provide fast boot times up to twice the performance than traditional SSD. The LED-backlit displays leverage ComfyView™ anti-glare technology to protect the eyes from blue light emissions and decrease eye fatigue. 

Optimized for conference calls, the TravelMate P648 comes with a HDR HD webcam with wide view support, dual microphones and two speakers, a mute key, high-definition audio and Acer Purified.Voice for enhancing voice sound and reducing background noise and keystrokes. Near Field Communication (NFC) supports paperless payments and tickets.

Tight Security and Time-Saving Management Tools

The TravelMate P648 is outfitted with powerful security software and hardware as well as time-saving management features to simplify the service and upgrade of many of its internal components. 

Acer ProShield Manager, a suite of both security and management tools, safeguards valuable data. It uses pre-boot authentication to protect the notebook from the BIOS to the application level. Users can create a Personal Secure Drive (PSD) to seamlessly store and encrypt all critical files, preventing data from being accessed if the notebook is lost or stolen. In addition, it provides an automated solution for managing IT assets remotely.

An integrated biometric fingerprint reader paired with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) reader protects the system from unauthorized access and a Kensington lock enables it to be secured to a desk.

Acer Office Manager (AOM), a manageability solution, lets IT professionals deploy security policies, monitor IT assets, and schedule maintenance tasks. Plus, Intel vPro with Active Management Technology enables them to administrate software and hardware computing assets.

The Acer TravelMate P648 commercial notebook line will be available to customers with Windows 10 Pro.

Multitasking Multiplied

Featuring the most powerful chipset, a high-capacity battery and stylish design – including a unique mocha brown color option – the Huawei Mate 8 is the ideal smartphone for today’s on-the-go professional. The Mate 8 is designed from the ground-up for productivity and its hardware and software have been fine-tuned to provide an elegant, efficient experience.

With new groundbreaking hardware, the Mate 8 is the first smartphone to run the Kirin 950 chipset, with CPU boosting power up 100 percent, GPU performance up 125 percent, and power efficiency up 70 percent compared to the Kirin 925. The device’s architecture balances energy efficiency with high-end performance through 4 x A72 2.3 GHz processors and 4 x A53 1.8 GHz processors. 

Equipped with a 4000mAh high-density battery, the Mate 8 delivers industry-leading power efficiency offering over two days of normal usage. And with rapid charging technology, the phone is able to charge a day’s worth of power in just 30 minutes. In fact, regular users can go without charging their phone for 2.36 days, and heavy users can go without charging for 1.65 days. The Mate 8 also features advanced six-layer thermal mechanics, which allows higher heat dissipation, leading to an excellent handling experience and lower power consumption.

Built for Productivity

Running on Huawei’s EMUI 4.0, based on Android Marshmallow 6.0, the Huawei Mate 8 offers hundreds of user experience tweaks and improvements, including a built-in automatic defragmentation service that continues optimizing system performance. Additionally, the Mate 8 features a split-screen mode that enables enhanced multitasking between apps.

Smart and Secure 

The Huawei Mate 8 introduces a new generation of fingerprint security with enhanced protection technology. The circular fingerprint sensor improves the effective identification area by 10 percent. In addition, the fingerprint friction ridge matching has three levels of security, providing a higher level of protection for users. The new sensor design also increases the unlock speed by 100 percent.

The Mate 8 maintains two sets of fingerprint interface standards to improve smartphone payment experiences—the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) and Android M standards. The strong CPU also supports real-time encryption of full storage for better data protection. The Mate 8 provides a microSD card lock, preventing anyone from accessing content in the card without a password. If a phone is stolen, user data cannot be obtained.

Huawei invested $98 million over three years to develop the first proprietary image sensor processor for faster focusing, higher clarity, and more accurate color shading. A leading research team was assembled in France to increase the processing speed of the camera, resulting in increasing the process bandwidth by four times with 14-bit precision. 

In addition, the Mate 8 adopts the revolutionary, all-new Sony 16MP IMX298, increasing the sensor size by 23 percent for breathtaking images. The Mate 8 also features an 8 MP front camera with a new beauty algorithm for taking the perfect selfie.

Efficient Conferencing

The Huawei Mate 8 features “Super Hands-Free 3.0” technology that enables hands-free operations in a variety of environments. Whether you’re in a car, a conference room or at a crowded party, users can enjoy clear conversations from up to 3 meters away. With a 120 degree range of audio pick up and directional noise reduction mode, conference calls are crisper and clearer than ever before, no matter where they take place. 

The Mate 8 features omnidirectional recording and directional playback. Three microphones automatically detect sound sources and record voices from all directions. During playback, people can choose any direction of the sound source they want to hear. Additionally, the Mate 8 provides document readjustment camera mode, which automatically straightens images that are captured at an angle for better viewing.

Globally Connected

The Mate 8 supports global connectivity and more bands than any other dual-SIM phone, including four 2G bands, nine 3G bands and 18 4G bands in 217 countries and regions with 1,334 operator settings. This makes it the perfect device for the global business traveler. 

Beautifully Crafted 

The Mate 8 features a refined, elegant design that highlights its beautiful 6-inch high contrast display. With a leading 83 percent screen-to-body ratio, the phone is able to stay sleek and compact without sacrificing a large display. The 2.5D curved diamond cut glass and aerospace grade aluminum metal are joined seamlessly, giving the device a blend of beauty and practicality.

The Huawei Mate 8 will be initially available in 30 countries including: Spain, Germany, France, United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Australia. The device will cost 599 euros for 3GB +32GB and 699 euros for 4GB + 64GB. It is available in four elegant colors: champagne gold, moonlight silver, space gray and mocha brown. 

“We’re delighted to also announce that from an ESA point of view we’re planning to launch the Mate 8 in March this year, at the same time across nearly 20 of all our main African markets such as South Africa, Kenya, Angola, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo, Zambia, Mauritius and many more. Pricing will be confirmed closer to launch,” concluded Munilall.
