@SamsungSA Delivers #AirConditioning That’s Effective in #Summer and #Winter

Samsung Electronics South Africa has vast experience in the development of air conditioning and has long been committed to creating cooling solutions that are both powerful and convenient, thereby ensuring optimum comfort for users. However, what many consumers are unaware of is the fact that Samsung air conditioners are equally effective at warming up a room and they can perform more efficiently than the average heater.

Although South Africa is renowned for its long, warm summers, when the winter hits, the cold can really affect internal living spaces. The traditional method of dealing with the cold is to utilise a bar or fan heater, but these products tend to work best as personal heating appliances and are less effective when attempting to warm an entire room.

Michael McKechnie, Director of Digital Appliances Group at Samsung Electronics SA, points out that Samsung’s air conditioners may have a reputation for being cooling appliances, but they are just as good when it comes to heating a room.

“You simply cannot obtain the same amount of comfort or efficiency in heating from another source, as these appliances are designed to control the entire room’s temperature. Moreover, an air conditioner allows you to maintain your desired room temperature more effectively too,” says McKechnie. 

“Consumers may be concerned that an air conditioner will use more power, but even this is not necessarily the case. Our products have a built in inverter that sets the appliance to idle once the room reaches optimal temperature, switching on again only if the temperature drops below this level. A heater, on the other hand, is likely to remain on throughout the day in order to keep a room warm, so it clearly draws a lot of electricity.”

He adds that another, intangible benefit of using an air conditioner for heat is that by more consistently controlling the temperature of the room, you are less likely to get ill from constant changes in temperature. In addition, Samsung’s premium products have ‘Virus Doctor’ built into them. This technology promotes clean air through a simple plasma ion, which is able to kill more than 99% of germs in the air.

One concern consumers may have is that purchasing an air conditioner is a much larger investment than buying a simple heater. McKechnie suggests that it should be remembered that such an appliance will be useful throughout the year, heating rooms in winter but will also be able to cool them in the long summer months. 

“Furthermore, although for new customers an air conditioner may be more costly than a simple heater, Samsung distributors have a finance scheme in place that will allow individuals to buy an appliance at a set monthly rate that includes a warranty, as well as a maintenance plan. This means they can get a high quality product, capable of serving their needs for many seasons to come, at a reasonable price.”

Women Technical Programme Empowers 16 #Electronics #Technicians @SamsungSA

In the electronics repair industry, a field where 99% of employees are men, Samsung Electronics South Africa has begun making inroads into these numbers with its Samsung Women Technical Programme. The first 16 graduates of what will be an ongoing programme have recently begun working at Samsung’s various service centres.

The Samsung Women Technical Programme is an initiative which started in November 2015, when 20 female students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds were chosen from a group of some 200 at the Samsung Engineering Academy in Ekurhuleni. These young women had already undergone training on Samsung’s various products and appliances and were then selected for the first ever training programme specifically for hand held devices.

“They were trained on how to repair various mobile device models, how to conduct updates to software, as well as the different aspects around fixing hardware. The idea was to turn these young women into qualified cell phone technicians,” says Samsung’s Director: SSA Service, Richard Chetty.

“The 16 young ladies who graduated from this course are certified to work on Samsung cell phones and they have been placed at a number of our service centres, where they will undergo a year of practical work in order to gain necessary and valuable experience. Following a final assessment, they will be certified as technicians, which will open up a meaningful career path to them.”

Chetty adds that while similar training programmes have been established in the industry, there is also a tendency for the hosting company’s responsibility to end when the trainees start their careers. However, he indicates that Samsung believes in focusing on things for the longer term, which is why the organisation will remain closely involved in the future development and occupational paths of these graduates. 

“Most importantly, these young ladies are merely the trailblazers of what we hope will become a flood of young female technical learners in South Africa. We are planning to have three intakes every year for women, although each intake will cover a different product focus area,” he explains.

“For example, a course focusing on larger appliances will require the learners to have a valid driver’s licence. In this way, they will not only learn how to service the appliances, but will be trained and certified as in-home technicians.” 

Chetty states that Samsung is considering the bigger picture with courses of this nature. They are designed to develop skills and create jobs and will even include training in aspects of entrepreneurship, so that future graduates have the opportunity to set up small businesses of their own.

“As a leader in South Africa, Samsung is committed to our responsibility toward our community and our goal of positively impacting on people’s lives. Our Samsung Women Technical Programme proves that job creation, skills development and women empowerment can be achieved. We want to encourage other corporate organisations to contribute to the economy and job creation by getting involved in similar schemes. Produced by Penguin Films, Disney Cookabout’s 26 episodes feature some of the best of South Africa’s locally-farmed, wholesome produce, giving a fascinating insight into the food children are used to seeing only in supermarkets and on their dinner plates. The show is fronted by home-grown talent including hosts Kirsten Mohamed (‘Chef Kirsten’) and her side-kick ‘Sous Chef’ Mthunzi Ntoyi who travel across the Western Cape with a dynamic group of young ‘cooktestants’, all in search of the freshest ingredients.

Each week, the cooktestants will battle it out to take home the Silver Spoon, and eventually the Golden Trophy, as they carry out challenges at various locations. With supplies in hand, they will attempt to create the tastiest dish in the magical Cookabout Kitchen where anything can happen, from doors and drawers sliding open and appliances responding to secret voice commands. The hilarious Mickey Mouse animated shorts will also be added into the mix, creating an entertaining comedic interlude for viewers whilst the cooktestants’ creations are cooking.

From his unforgettable role in the classic football film, The Replacements, to the hugely successful Drumline, to performing in the Broadway revival of The Wiz, Orlando Jones’ versatility is well documented. Orlando has created memorable characters while working with some of Hollywood’s most successful directors.

Jones’ career began working behind the scenes as a writer on NBC’s A Different World and Fox’s Martin. He then worked alongside top Hollywood heavy-weights to launch FX network into 18 million homes. Orlando later combined his writing and acting talents when he was handpicked by Quincy Jones to join Fox’s sketch comedy franchise, MadTV.

The LA Stage Alliance nominated Orlando for an Ovation Award for his performance alongside Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Fences.

On the big screen, Orlando has featured in films such as Magnolia, Bedazzled, Say it isn’t so, Double Take, Evolution and the 2016 release, Devil and the deep blue sea, alongside Jason Sudekis and Jessica Biel

He has also starred in various roles on our TV screens including Sleepy Hollow, Rules of Engagement and the lead in Evidence.

Amongst his many talents, Jones was also the producer and writer for the 2009 award winning documentary, The Music Lesson, which won Best North American Documentary at the Women’s International Film Festival.

Samsung Electronics South Africa has donated 31 smartphones to non-governmental organisation (NGO), Gift of the Givers South Africa, in an effort to support communications within the association’s emergency teams.

Badr Kazi, Corporate Liaison Manager at Gift of the Givers South Africa, says that advanced and reliable mobile connectivity is crucial for the organisation’s various specialist teams. “When our workers are assisting at the scene of a crisis, effective communications is quite simply a matter of life and death,” he says.

Kazi explains that Gift of the Givers teams must coordinate their operations under extreme conditions, often where telecommunications and power infrastructure has been destroyed. “With the assistance of our sponsors, we typically set up a portable hot spot and organise our operations using mobile phones. In a situation such as the aftermath of a natural catastrophe, these mobile phones have to be very reliable, rugged and easy to use, as well as deliver long battery life. We were therefore delighted to receive the advanced smartphones from Samsung, which meet every requirement we have for communications in areas that have experience devastation.” 

Samsung donated a range of handsets with features ideal for this nature of critical work. Delicious, scrumptious flavours are definitely a big hit for 2016. “We’ve seen the naked cake and buttercream cake as big trends in 2015, we’re still seeing lots of these being ordered for 2016 but now these trends are oozing with yumminess. We’re adding lots of chocolate- , strawberry- or caramel drizzle to the naked- and buttercream cakes as well as berries, fudge, Oreos, meringues, caramel popcorn etc. as decorations,” comments Wedding Inspirations contributor Maggi Badenhorst of Edible Art Cakes (www.edible-art-cakes.co.za).

Metallic moment
Whether it’s in stationery, décor, flowers or even in a daring dress detail, metallics are the hottest trend of 2016, and while no one is forgetting the classics, gold and silver, it’s the softer tones of copper and bronze that are making a splash! “These softer tones lend themselves to a romantic, free-spirited and dreamy look. Personalised stationery is making a splash, with watercolour invitations decorated with beautiful floral patterns and soft natural hues proving hugely popular. “We are also moving away from detailed vintage designs and towards more simplistic invitations embellished with geometric shapes, big and bold calligraphic names and a touch of gold, silver and even bronze. Light shades of blue are becoming very popular, especially duck egg blue, and it is easy to see why. This stunning colour will keep the groom happy while the muted tones make the design soft, elegant and romantic. Deena Naidoo, Aarya’s restaurateur since he won a partnership deal with Tsogo Sun to run the restaurant in MasterChef South Africa in 2012, is a proudly South African chef and Aarya’s menu reflects this, drawing from diverse South African cuisines, while also capitalising on Deena’s extensive knowledge of spices. Says Deena, “We’ve created a range of new dishes across the menu to add new taste experiences, while retaining our focus on our wonderful South African fare.”
Additions to the starters menu include Salt and pepper calamari tubes, and Spicy seafood hot pot. A new salad is Oak-smoked salmon trout salad, and a Lamb pizza is new to the pizza selection.

Delicious new options on the main course menu include Spaghetti or penne with basil pesto (oil, garlic, nuts and parmesan) and chicken or prawns; Homemade burger with roasted onions, pickle, salad, and melted mozzarella; King prawns; Biltong spice crusted 250g beef fillet; Red wine and rosemary braised lamb shank; and Deena’s best – a trio of curry.

Aarya has become a popular venue for special celebratory or corporate occasions.

947 and Huawei have been dropping announcements of the nine acts that will make up one world-class stage at Huawei Joburg Day on 3rd September.

The 947 team has been broadcasting from venues around Joburg, hosting live performances and interviewing eight of South Africa’s hottest artists. 947’s Breakfast Xpress kicked things off with one of the biggest names on the South African music scene: MiCasa, followed by Matthew Mole, who performed on Stacey Norman’s show. Hip hop and dance fans got their wishes when Stacy announced Kwesta and then Timo ODV.

Greg & Lucky were the lucky ones to welcome Goodluck to the fold, and then gave listeners a live performance from DJ Kent.

Afternoon Drive with Anele made the final three announcements: Kyle and Shekhinah; AKA and… you’ll need to tune in at 17h45 to find out who will be the ninth headliner on the Joburg Day 2016 stage. All the action from the broadcasts and performances have been brilliantly captured by the Huawei P9 smartphone with its Leica dual-lens and audiences have been able to follow the news on the hashtag #HuaweiJoburgDay. Listeners were also given the chance to win one of nine P9s by engaging with the station as the artists were revealed.

“When Huawei and 947 announced that Joburg Day was coming back, we called on audiences to tell us which artists they wanted on the line-up,” said 947 station manager, Ravi Naidoo. “We were flooded with suggestions and we believe that we have managed to get nine of the hottest artists in South Africa to join us at Joburg Day 2016.”
