With the festive season fast upon us and as thousands of South Africans gear up for holiday travel this December, Diageo South Africa has timeously launched its 2017 Drive Dry campaign – which aims to shock South Africans into thinking twice about getting behind the wheel drunk.

Drive Dry, previously known for its award-winning scare campaign “Papa Wag Vir Jou”, will be using the power of storytelling in 2017, to try and change South Africans’ behaviour towards drinking and driving.

At an event attended by government, stakeholders, media and celebrities, guests were shown the reality of drink driving by watching real stories of South Africans who have experienced loss, trauma, hurt and difficulty due to driving while under the influence – either due to their own actions or those of a loved-one or a stranger.

These brave individuals were captured on film, telling their stories and these will be made into a series of short clips to be shared with media, as well as on social media over the next year.

“Our overall goal is to impact and change people’s lives by using real stories to give the campaign resonance. We have also approached celebrity ambassadors who are passionate about driving dry to spread the message far and wide,” said Diageo SA’s Legal and Corporate Security Director Viwe Soga.

In January 2016, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters highlighted that the festive season’s road fatalities had increased by 14% with a total of 1755 fatalities from 1 December 2015 to 11 January 2016 – many of which are a direct consequence of alcohol abuse. According to the WHO Global Status Report for 2015, South Africa is ranked 23rd out of 50 African countries for the highest number of road deaths. The report also estimates that 7,8% of South Africa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is lost due to road traffic crashes. This lost revenue could be used to address South Africa's other social issues, such as lack of funding for tertiary students.

South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), a non-profit organisation based in Pietermaritzberg, recommends solutions such as an increase in random alcohol testing, the establishment of specialised drink-driving courts so that offenders are tried and convicted within one month of the incident, as well as for every driver to be tested for alcohol or drugs at every crash scene.

“Our mission is to stop drink-driving, protect families from the trauma of losing loved ones and in doing so, to make a tangible difference to South Africans’ lives,” said Caro Smit, founder of SADD and guest speaker at the 2017 Drive Dry campaign launch event.

The Drive Dry video clips will be rolled out over the next year and used across various media platforms, as well as for visual content at Diageo branded and partner events, school visits as part of a drive to educate the youth and at tavern workshops.

“This is going to be an incredibly powerful campaign, and we are honoured that our storytellers have agreed to share their stories in the hope of changing someone else’s life. Responsibility, and looking after the communities in which we operate is key to Diageo’s business. Our brands are made with pride and are only to be enjoyed responsibly,” says Soga.

South Africans can follow the conversation, tell their own stories, watch the video clips, and share the Drive Dry message with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #ThisIsMyStory.

From the producers of Hard to Get and Happiness is a Four Letter Word, comes the two-sided, family-engaged-comedy affair, KEEPING UP WITH THE KANDASAMY’S. The film will be released in cinemas on 3 March 2017. It is directed by Durban filmmaker, Jayan Moodley (White Gold) and produced by Helena Spring and the late Junaid Ahmed.

Described by Moodley as a “love letter to Chatsworth”, KEEPING UP WITH THE KANDASAMY’S was filmed on location in Chatsworth, Durban, South Africa, and stars Jailoshini Naidoo (Eastern Mosaic, Lotus FM) and Maeshni Naicker (Broken Promises) as the matriarchal rivals of neighbouring families, whose young adult children become romantically involved, and despite their best efforts to keep them apart, they are forced to acknowledge that in the end “love will always prevail.”

“Shanti Naidoo (Maeshni Naicker) is a typical Type-A personality. Always on the move, going out of her way to please people, and overcompensating for her perceived inadequacies by continually cooking up a storm in the kitchen. Her life would be just fine, except that her neighbour Jennifer Kandasamy (Jailoshini Naidoo), always seems to hold the upper hand.

When Jennifer realises her daughter Jodi (Mishqah Parthiephal) is in love with Shanti's son Prinesh (Madhushan Singh), she is determined to break them up. But in order to do that she will have to enlist her rival's help. Together the two women scheme and plot, recruit prospective partners and generally interfere with their kids wherever they can,” says Spring.

The cast also comprises, among others, Mishqah Parthiephal, Madhushan Singh, Mariam Bassa, Rajesh Gopie, Koobeshen Naidoo and Neil Govender.

Accurate and responsive keystrokes

#StarWars: THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES Comes to @DStv #DisneyXD

"Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures" is an all-new animated television series debuted on 21 November, at 19:00 on Disney XD (DStv channel 304). The fun-filled adventure comedy series  introduces all-new heroes and villains in exciting adventures with many familiar Star Wars characters.

Told in the whimsically-charged style that audiences have come to expect from LEGO Star Wars entertainment, the series stars the Freemakers, a family of scavengers who build and sell starships from the scoured debris of space battles strewn throughout the galaxy. When their youngest discovers a natural connection with the Force through an ancient artifact - the Kyber Saber – his world is turned upside down, and he and his family are thrown into an epic struggle against the Empire to restore peace and freedom to the galaxy. Throughout their adventures, the Freemakers explore new worlds, meet new and familiar characters, and learn the true value of what it means to be a family.

Loring Produces First-time Album #YAELflyAway for Crossover Talent YAEL @YAELvocals

Petite and beautiful, YAEL so impressed Richard Loring with her crystal-clear, powerful classically- trained voice that he took her on as his first protégé, mentoring her over 18 months to produce her debut album, ‘Fly Away’, which was launched on 13 November. The event, held at Tshwane’s stylish new inner-city event venue, ‘O12 Central’, featured YAEL, backed by the Soweto Spiritual Singers in a ‘Richard Loring’ Production. An exhibition of up-and-coming urban artists and African craft beer tasting added to the ‘wrap-around’ experience.

“In my 50 years in the entertainment industry, producing a nurturing talent, I have rarely found a voice so pure and powerful,” says Richard Loring, a Multi Lifetime Achievement Awardee and he himself an award-winning performer on stage, film, TV, cabaret and as a recording artist – in London’s West End and in South Africa.

Loring was particularly captivated by YAEL’s international star quality when he heard her performing ‘crossover’ numbers from classical to pop. He was inspired to draw on his experience to produce a world-class performer in the style of popular ‘crossover’ stars like Katherine Jenkins, Andrea Bocelli, Hayley Westenra and Sarah Brightman, who have made classical performances accessible to the global market.

YAEL’s own story is particularly poignant. Classically trained in piano and voice, YAEL had dreamed of following a career in music. Love came early and she married Dave Benjamin and became mother to two beautiful children. For many women this would have been the end of their dream but, determined and committed, YAEL, encouraged by her family, decided to fund her own album, to ‘Fly Away’ and to follow her dream.

Also with a dream, Jeffrey Wapnick, MD of the property giant, City Property, is spearheading the revival of the Tshwane city centre.

012central, in the hub of Wapnick’s vision of creating an artistic precinct in the city, has been attractively revived to create an expansive atmospheric multi-functional venue – highly desirable for event organisers especially for staging special and, specifically, culturally significant events.

Wapnick says, “012central is the perfect place for discovering something new. It is a place of renewal, of hope and functions on a raw, urban plane dotted with art and greenery. There is no doubt of the sense of scale of 012central, and its uniqueness is the blank canvas it offers event hosts to create something new, something bold, to cross divides.

“We have a long history of supporting young artists to showcase their talent, from sculptors to artists from a variety of backgrounds and the venue was an easy choice to launch the career of such an exciting new talent as YAEL.”

YAEL performs in diverse styles - from operatic arias, contemporary to rock - and her repertoire extends across many languages – English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Yiddish and Zulu.

To create an exciting musical juxtaposition, Loring identified the Soweto Spiritual Singers to offer an ideal natural synchronicity with YAEL’s talents. Says Loring, “On several tracks YAEL’s soaring voice contrasts with the rich blend of earthy, African spiritual sounds and gospel rhythms, which are infused with a jazzy saxophone and a hint of African instruments to create a triumphant unifying harmony.”

“I love my country,” says YAEL, “and believe that we South Africans can show the world, currently so torn by racial strife, that tolerance and harmony can be achieved through music.”

Nkululeko Vilakazi of the Sowetan Spiritual Singers explains the dynamics of this unique mix: “The fusion of the Eurocentric sound and African ‘heartbeat’ music produces an unusual and interesting harmony through music creating a universal message of hope.”

In this album, Fly Away, YAEL effortlessly transcends boundaries of culture, race, language and genre through African, European, pop, folk and contemporary music, which blend into one, rich experience. Tracks include those originally written and performed by David Foster, Madonna, Brian May, Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi, Joy, and Albert Hammond. Illustrating the range and languages featured are tracks such as Canto Alla Vita; What are you doing the rest of your life; One day I’ll fly away; Love is; I’ve dreamed of you; Viva La Vida; and Eres Tu, a tour de force finale.

The title of YAEL’s album is in part inspired by the Will Jennings/Joe Sample piece, One day I’ll fly away, written for Randy Crawford around 1980. Fly Away is more than a remarkable crossover success for South Africa; it is the realisation of visionary thinking that rings universally in the lyrics of Will Jennings: “Leave all this to yesterday. Why live life from dream to dream and dread the day when dreaming ends?”
