South Africa will be among the first to have the Mate Series smartphone in country, with the HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro and the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 10.

A New, Mobile AI Computing Architecture for Intelligent Mobile Experiences
The HUAWEI Mate 10 and HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro are the first devices powered by the new Kirin 970 processor and deliver AI enhancements for a faster, more customized mobile experience. The Kirin 970 is built using an advanced TSMC 10nm semiconductor manufacturing process, and features an octa-core ARM Cortex CPU, a first-to-market Mali G72 12-core GPU and the first NPU designed specifically for a mobile device. The Kirin 970 also has a new dual ISP for AI-powered intelligent photography.

The specialized NPU, combined with Huawei’s innovative HiAI mobile computing platform, means the Kirin 970 delivers 25x better performance and 50x greater energy efficiency for AI-related tasks, compared to four Cortex-A73 cores. Huawei has again partnered with Leica to co-engineer the dual lens camera for the HUAWEI Mate 10 and HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro. Joburg Property Company Welcome Totem Winners To The Council Chamber @JhbProperty

The Joburg Property Company (JPC), an agency of the City of Johannesburg, invited each of the 134 Totem winners of the Leave a Legacy Totem Project for the Council Chamber to view their work which began as either a story or a drawing. It was carved into a Kiat Totem which is now an integral part of the Council Chambers. The Totems contain the stories of the residents of Johannesburg, told in visual form through the unique creation of these beautifully carved Totems.

The winners circled the Council Chamber looking for their story and the Totem that they inspired. The shouts of joy and laughter was heard throughout the Chamber as their signature was discovered and the look of awe on their faces, told the story of profound pride in their work and being a part of this historical building.

The idea behind the Totems was that of being able to understand the many cultures that make up the city without having a language barrier. Rather to use art as a medium to draw the varied age and culture groups together into one art form, the Totem Pole.

The journey began with all districts being advised and given workshop material to enable them to communicate with their local people and connect with them. Winners were offered R5000 for successful entries and this meant so much to so many. People would tentatively show interest but then start to walk away because they felt that they were not artists and did not stand a chance. Leaders in these communities sat with these people and spoke about their circumstances and through this each was able to draw a unique expression of their communities. Many of these people are the winners.

At a workshop in Mayfair, with mom and her two sons, each of them created a drawing and a story. Her youngest son was only about two or three years old and he would mimic everyone else’s drawing with thick crayons and created a very special abstract piece of artwork.

The stunning yet sad images created by children and how grown up they were, made some of the project leaders weep with despair. One young girl, one of the ultimate winners, took ownership of her artwork in a way that a seasoned artist would and wanted to understand exactly what the next steps were and be involved in this process. Others were just overjoyed and could not believe their artwork would be displayed in those hallowed corridors. Their pride was overwhelming to community leaders and humbling to others.

When some winners were notified they did not believe they had won and when it sunk in most were happy to give it away to those who needed it more ie set up animal shelters, give money to their mothers who had supported them all their lives, study art and donate the money to arts centres in their communities.

Many foundations that became involved in this journey did not know each other and now have the opportunity to network with each other on other projects. Through this project they have also met different members of their communities who hopefully will become familiar faces at their workshops.

In order to represent all seven regions fairly, between 10 and 25 designs were selected per region. These selections were based not only on the total number of entries per region, but on the potential for each design to be translated into a beautiful and relevant totem which represents a community of Johannesburg on many levels, encompassing all ages and demographics.

Every image was treated with great respect. At the same time entrants [P1] were consulted on the design translation of their image to create a three-dimensional wooden image. The totems are 2 metres tall, 80cm wide and 200cm deep, so a graphic designer was brought in to re-fashion them slightly to make them fit around the three sides.

The project could be described as “idiosyncratic”, meaning that the challenge has been to find the “right balance in image translation to technical translation, while maintaining an essence of the original intention by the person who made the original drawing”.

134 out of 570 entries were accepted and processed into the beautiful wooden carvings that now have pride of place in the Council Chambers. Each Totem took 16 hours to design, create and carve in brown Kiaat timber before being put in place in the walkway. Each one is signed at the bottom with the name of the artist and each Totem tells their story of life in Joburg.

It was fitting that the competition for those Totems commenced over Heritage Day in 2016. These Totems were once again in the spotlight when the JPC was listed as a finalist in the prestigious BASA (Business and Arts South Africa) annual awards ceremony held on 17 September 2017 at the Nirox Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind.

Over the centuries, one of the most important ways culture has been celebrated and transferred, is through the visual arts. And the Council Chamber Totems which are now in full view of the public and the councillors, do just that on a daily basis.

The winners that attended and received their certificates of ownership, were overjoyed and could not believe their artwork would be displayed in those hallowed corridors. Their pride was overwhelming to community leaders and humbling to others.

With this colourful palette of history and culture as a backdrop, participants in the art competition were able to draw on and express their personal Joburg experiences, perspectives and heritage.

In the spirit of Ubuntu, the selected artworks were each awarded with R5000, but the greatest prize that could have been given, was the overwhelming sense of pride in seeing their work memorialised.

Each artist rushed to find their signature as it was the first time they had seen their story set in a Totem and their sense of awe was evident. From youngest to oldest, the ran their hands along the beautifully carved Kiat Totem, feeling the story come to life as it had when they first wrote or drew it.

Visitors to the Council Chambers are now able to enjoy the experience of walking the circular floors of the Chamber, complimented by the towering 2 metre high totems framing magnificent city views. Each totem carries the name of the artist at the bottom of the piece.

The Totem Art Competition praises the honoured traditions of the citizens of Johannesburg and the contributions they have to the City. When the competition kicked off, JPC invited residents to take part in leaving a lasting legacy. And collectively, they have certainly done just that.

A totem pole carving symbolizes or commemorates personal stories that recount familiar legends or notable events. As such, totems were selected as a symbol to epitomize the people’s stories of hope, happiness, sadness, struggle of every day life in the hustle and bustle of the city of Joburg.

The newly completed Council Chamber rises above Joburg as a constant reminder that those who take their seat in these chambers, represent those in the city that sweeps around them. The walkway that surrounds the Chamber was the perfect place to utilize 134 totems in order to remind those who use the space, that their decisions will affect the people of Joburg.

[P1]Some entrants not all were contacted, but all entrants received a scanned colour version of original form for posterity’s sake. This was especially meaningful for the families of the youth who realised the impact of this as a legacy project.

Silverstar has become a glittering landmark on the Krugersdorp landscape and this is thanks to the passion of Director of Operations and Complex General Manager, Shane Collinson and the dedicated team of people he has brought together throughout his tenure. After 28 years of unbroken service in the South African gaming and hospitality sector – two decades of which have been with Tsogo Sun - Collinson will play his final hand as he retires from the industry he has served with such dedication.

A Lucky Roll of the Dice
In the 1980’s, Collinson was working at Telkom as a technician but he was always drawn to what he describes as the “glitz and glamour” of the Wild Coast Sun. His life would soon take an unexpected turn, when he took a gamble and applied for a job at his favourite entertainment destination. Luck was on his side because thanks to the international technical training he had received, Collinson was hired immediately as a Leaf Technician for the slot machines.

At the Top of his Game
Some three decades later Collinson has reached the top of his game and he is bidding a bittersweet farewell to Silverstar, which he describes as one of the most beautiful casino properties he has had the privilege of leading. Charged with the full redelevopment and turn-around strategy of Silverstar six years ago, Collinson has taken Silverstar and his team of employees from strength-to-strength, and he leaves the gaming and entertainment complex in excellent shape for untold successes in the future.

While he may be leaving, it is clear that Collinson’s passion for Silverstar remains as strong as ever before and he says, “Silverstar has one of the most amazing cultures, particularly when it comes to its members of staff. The guests that come through the doors are truly unique in that they are perhaps the most respectful and down-to-earth people I have ever had the privilege of working with. What is more, the geographic location of the complex, nestled in the valley of a mountain, makes Silverstar a truly beautiful destination.”

A Passion for People
Throughout his tenure, Collinson’s star has shone as brightly as the entertainment complex he has managed. Known for giving back to the community and the people he leads, Collinson champions corporate social responsibility in its truest sense. “It may be difficult to face the harsh realities of life head-on, but it is through the upliftment of people that we can make a difference, no matter how small. At the end of the day it is much better to give than to take in life,” says Collinson.

This desire to be mindful of those less fortunate has also helped in the exceptional turn-around in corporate culture that Colinson has achieved during his time at Silverstar. “Tsogo Sun believes whole-heartedly in the importance of people, which is why strategic programmes are in place at Silverstar to ensure culture is continually and measurably improved upon. This has always been top-of-mind and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved in this regard at Silverstar.”

Collinson’s most memorable moment was watching 400 000 stars fall from the ceiling at the grand opening of Silverstar, which had taken months of hard work to refurbish. After two years of refinement, the glitz, glamour and excitement of the Royalty Soapie Awards (RSAs) will be returning in 2018, and all soap operas shown in South Africa and their production companies are invited to enter. Taking place on March 17th at the Durban International Convention Centre, the new and improved event promises to honour the soap opera industry on a night that will never be forgotten.

As before, the event that celebrates the achievements of the South African soap opera sector will continue to honour all role-players in the industry including writers, actors, producers, set designers, technicians and more. Soapie viewers are of course a vital voice and they too will get a chance to express their views when they vote in the all-important Most Popular Soapie of the Year category.

Next year, several new and exciting developments will take the RSAs to the next level. One example of this is the establishment of the Royalty Soapie Foundation (RSF), which will be the social responsibility beneficiary for the ceremony going forward. The RSF will seek to assist young South Africans from marginalised communities and rural areas, as well as other designated groups such as the disabled, to gain access to education and skills specifically in the film and television sector.

“We are excited to be back and the awards event promises to deliver more shimmer and shine than ever before! With the launch of the RSF, the RSAs have been given new meaning because the effects of the show now extend way beyond one incredible night, and will translate into a year-long social responsibility programme,” says Royalty Soapie Awards Chief Executive Officer, Winnie Ntshaba.

A rollercoaster decade-and-a-half culminated in the celebration of #15yearsofawesome at 2017’s really Awesome gaming expo (rAge), which took place between 6 October and 8 October. It revealed an industry that is not only thriving, but is here to stay.

Despite adverse weather conditions, the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg saw 35,845 visitors going full-geek over the weekend, with over 130 exhibitors hosting the finest in gaming, technology and gadgets.

“I was a little concerned when looking at the weather conditions before the show, but our fans proved their dedication by showing up in droves to support the expo,” says Michael James, Senior Project Manager for rAge.

An undisputed highlight of the year, the 15th rAge celebrated its growth and success with VS Gaming as the headline sponsor and OMEN by HP sponsoring the NAG LAN. The event was bigger and better than ever before (a fact reflected in the record-breaking attendance), with the weekend featuring competitions, esports tournaments, exhibitions and – of course – an array of geeky paraphernalia. Uniting gaming and popular culture, rAge is also proud to have hosted everyone from the most dedicated of gamers to the most casual of fans.

The NAG LAN was equally exciting, with over 2,000 gamers burning through bandwidth at a record rate. Our internet partner, MWEB, reported a massive 130TB was downloaded at an average rate of 5.6 gigabits per second, with a peak of nearly 8 gigabits per second. MWEB, along with Intel on server duty and Aruba on network duty, made this year’s NAG LAN one of the best in recent memory.

“We saw 527 media accredited over the weekend and 45 one-on-one media interviews conducted. With the increased importance of social media in social life, it is only reasonable that social media presence plays a greater role in the hiring process. The analysis of the social media accounts of applicants allows a greater level of filtering than has ever before been possible. Using social media screening, companies have the ability to weed out candidates that would reflect poorly on the company's brand and reputation.

A social media background check allows a company to identify red flags in candidates before they are hired and even before an interview takes place. Instances in social media of crime, bigotry, and violence are warning signs that can be used to disqualify applicants early in the process. This is a process that keeps the company a safe place to work and increases the value of each hire.

It is critical to the brand of a company that employees have a social media presence that not only does not reflect poorly on the company but creates positive brand awareness. Employees not only represent themselves on social media, but also the company, even when using personal accounts. It is increasingly important to screen candidates on their ability to present themselves, and thus the company, well on social media, as well as a general lack of anti-social behavior.

As social media becomes more prolific and the intensity with which it is used increases, performing social media background checks becomes simultaneously more and more important and more and more difficult.

It has become a necessity for companies to screen applicants on the basis of their social media presence. Doing so has the ability to weed out applicants that display anti-social behaviors such as violence, bigotry, and crime. Greater screening of applicants on the basis of their social media background and how they represent themselves and will represent the company as employees creates a better work environment.
