New Year Resolutions - Week 22 Achievements & Failures #TheLifesWay

Hi Friends,

Week 22 started with showing my brother various places around Johannesburg before he embarks on Cape Town on his own with his family. Montecasino won the heart of his daughter as she loved to play at the kids' zone/gaming zone. 

Week 22 - Sat 28 May 2022 - Fri 03 Jun 2022

1. Walking - 3 kilometres is what I achieved in the whole week and now will have to cover the same during the rest of the year. This may be those 2 weeks which I kept open for no walk and still able to achieve the 1000-kilometre mark. The total mark 

2. Thank You - I started from the 22000 mark to close at 42460 during the week. I am sure I will have to pick it up too later in the month. 

3. Entertainment - I watched Runway 34 starring Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh along with Amitabh Bachchan. The film fails to leave an impression as monologues of Amitabh don't create effects like Pink or his other movies on social causes. The one I loved watching was Toolsidas Junior movie which is a movie where a kid learns Snooker and beats all odds to reach the finals. One of my college classmates is being used to showcase the Snooker shots while the actors acted with the dialogues etc. 

4. Launch Event - I was invited by Western Digital to meet their executives at the Securex 2022 expo which was nice. I didn't get any goodies bag from the team but just random expo stuff from various stalls which is not worthwhile. I was also invited by the Intel Africa 12th Gen Processor launch event which happened at the Evetech office in Centurion which I always wanted to visit. I shot a lot of YT shorts and got a lot of goodies for which video will be shared soon. 

5. Reunion - My mom and dad also came to South Africa just in time before we embark on the trip to Kruger National Park. They reached on 2 June. The next week I will be on leave from my day-to-day job and only enjoying the same with my family. It's long since I saw my parents. I last met them on 16 Feb 2020 in Dubai. A lot of sweets and other stuff came when they arrived which is going to be the snacks for a long long time now. My daughter loves my mom the most as she has lived with them and being the first born she has received the love of everyone. 

All the activities took a backseat as the focus was on fun, laughter, togetherness, eating and talking our hearts out. I didn't pray for a single day, I didn't do anything else other than attending office calls and trying to accommodate myself according to the plans made by the family to visit several restaurants and places.

My association with Sandisk goes a long way when I first bought my first pen drive around 2005 when it was around 128MB or 256MB capacity and the very first time I saw the pen drive when one of my uncles went to Austria to attend a conference and received one of 16MB capacity and at that time my desktop's USB port could not even recognize the same. 

When the brand asked me to check an SSD for review for 2 weeks, I was never thinking that this is going to be in such a small package in which I used to buy pen drives earlier. The package is very much similar in the Red colour as you see in all the SD cards, micro-SD cards and various kind of pen drives. I think I will still be having mint condition SanDisk 4GB Pendrives in my Technolgy Suitcase which I have kept unopened. 

Let's see how we can use this particular Sandisk SSD Plus 480GB and the various ways we can use it are - 

Upgrading the laptop or your desktop with this fast and reliable SSD which will definitely improve the overall performance of the device. I observed it when I replaced my 1TB HDD from my Asus Vivobook and replaced it with 500GB SSD, it not only reduced the boot-up time but also shutdowns are really fast and even all the office apps are just booting in less than a second or so. Even the Wondershare's Filmora on the laptop does it works fast which is more dependent on RAM rather than the memory disk but any which way there is a significant improvement in speed there also. 

Coming to the read and write speeds for which SSD are known for and this version of Sandisk SSD Plus offers a high sequential read speeds of up to 535MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 445MB/s which is way higher than the hard disk drive in whatever device you are using. I have always wondered about how the Apple Macbook's work so great and that is only because of the 128GB SSD or 256GB SSD that they install in their devices along with the RAM and of course the operating system is also powerful. But after I installed the SSD in my ASUS laptop I felt the same kind of power in my Microsoft Windows 10 Asus Vivobook using Intel i5 8th Generation processor. 

Moreover, the best part is the weight of this Sandisk SSD Plus which is just less than 50 grams, I didn't even have something to measure the exact weight of this small plasticky device which you can easily carry in your backpack or even pocket too using an external casing. Also, the Sandisk SSD Plus is shock and vibration resistant so even if it falls, it might actually work and protect your data. 

As there are no moving parts so there is no sound that comes from your device when you boot the same and also there are no heating issues that you generally experience with the HDDs. My laptop left-hand side was getting so hot as the 1TB 2.5inch HDD was placed right under the palm rest so when I replaced the same with HDD, the problem vanished in a second. This also reduces laptop battery consumption as SSD is more power-efficient. Also, it's plug and play is as easy as just sliding the SSD card in the SATA port connectors. 

If you are aware of the SLC caching which basically means that the data is stored as one bit in every cell inside this NAND flash making it significantly faster to help boost burst write performance which is ideal for our day to day use.  

The SanDisk SSD Plus comes with step-by-step instructions and cloning software to help you set up your new drive in case you are replacing your HDD with this one. You can also install the same as a secondary or primary booting device if you have a desktop or so. It also has the screw sockets to nicely attach the SSD drive inside your laptop or desktop in whatever way you want. 

Moreover, I was thinking that I will use the same in one of my HDD casings from Astrum or Orico but that didn't work out so I may need to find some other alternative solution. But as the device will be going back to the Western Digital's offices so I am not going to purchase an SSD casing for my day to day use. But I am sure, if your old laptop or desktop needs a magic touch to transform into a 2020 powerful device for kids to do online classes or using it for entertainment, SSD is the way to go and Sandisk SSD Plus comes with 3 years warranty too and is priced around R1075 for 480GB variant and is available at all the online and retails electronics and computer stores.

As a precaution to the recent novel coronavirus, more and more companies and governments are either encouraging or have made work-from-home mandatory. IT teams are tasked with leading this transition across data systems, mobile computing devices, applications and new security challenges so employees can feel both connected and productive at home (both are not straightforward tasks).

We’ve gathered a few tips from our IT team here at Western Digital to help your workforce’s transition be more successful. Here are the top eight:

1) Don’t Wait – Start Today (Literally, Right Now)

Most companies today already have part of their workforce working from home, but it’s an entirely different scenario when hundreds, or thousands, of people are connecting remotely to virtual systems at the same time. If your company is still not encouraging working from home, or only partially, use the time now to prepare for the potential – a situation where most employees will need to access applications and data securely from remote locations. Being a step ahead with your data infrastructure, policies and documentation, will help ensure a smooth transition for your business at a critical time.

2) Test It Till You Break It

Test your systems to ensure performance, reliability and scalability. Test application and hardware infrastructure at maximum load; understand how many concurrent connections your VPN can support; send your entire IT team to work from home. Find out where the remote operations gaps are. It’s far better to see what breaks in a test scenario than when your company’s employees depend on it. So, learn in advance where the weak points are and fix them now.

3) Streamline the Muddle of Communication and Security Tools

There is a plethora of virtual meetings, chat, documentation, project and other management tools out there, and likely people are using more than one in your company today (whether authorized or not). This is the time to streamline the official tools employees should be using, ensuring these services can scale (you may need to review your SaaS contracts) and put documentation in place (accessible in a shared repository) on how to install and use them.

4) Get Ready to Monitor With 24/7 Support

With any new situation you’ll need to closely monitor infrastructure to be able to respond to any shortfalls in real time. With employees using an all new technology setup, and many potentially veering from regular daytime working hours (think of those with children at home who will catch up on work late at night), expect to need to provide more IT support than usual, and at different hours of the day.

5) Establish Policies for Laptops, Services, and Peripherals

You’ll need to establish policies for how your company can support employees at home with everything from internet services, to computing devices, or peripherals. Some questions you should explore:

• How many employees will require a laptop to work from home? How many can you provision?
• Will the company pay for internet or phone services?
• What if someone does not have internet services or needs to upgrade speed?
• What’s the policy on ordering peripherals such as keyboards, monitors, headphone sets, etc.?

6) Create Practical Documentation (and Accessibility)

The more you can support and enable the remote workforce to use the proper tools, the more you can impact the productivity and morale of the business. Prepare with the right documentation to enable everyone to work better – both end users at home and your IT team. Make sure to have a clear place where employees can find how-to guides on installing all the applications and accessibility tools they need. Take a moment to also ensure you have documentation and account accessibility for all IT systems should a core team member be unavailable.

7) Automate. Repeat.

Now is the time to explore what else can be automated in your IT workflows, particularly when it comes to IT tickets and support questions. You’ll be seeing a lot of similar support questions, and tools like AI-enabled chatbots have come a long way to ease the pressure off your team members for commonly asked questions. With working from home possibly an ongoing situation, IT may need to support the business in new channels and undertakings. Anything that can be automated will allow your team to focus on more complex tasks.

8) Set Up a Better Home Office, Together

Whether it’s tips on how to set up a dedicated workspace, to desk ergonomics, working from family-shared spaces, or how to set structured breaks to unplug– you’ll need to help your workforce feel productive and connected from home. Using multiple ways of communication – guides, chats, shared meetings – can not only help people find ways to be more efficient, but also set an example of how to stay better connected in a virtual environment. You can offer a virtual help desk to make communication feel personal, create online ‘rooms’ for water cooler chats, and simply get creative.

Western Digital - My Passport Essential SE 1TB Portable Harddisk

Hi Guys,

I was always a data cruncher meaning that I was always on a look out of songs, videos, books etc from friends, internet etc. Earlier I used to carry the hard-disk of my desktop at that time it was something of the size of 40-80 gb capacity. As time progressed, I bought this Transcend 640gb hard disk on 22 July 2010 but that didn't worked well and lost all my data by June 2011. At that time I had to invest in another hard disk as I got the transcend one from Delhi and I was in London at that point. I still have that hard disk as I couldn't complaint to Transcend for the same, but at the time of writing I think this month I will file a complaint. 

Coming back to the buying decision, I had listened about Western Digital but never thought that their hdd will be so small and great in looks. I went on to see the same at the nearest PC Curry showroom and saw the one kept there. I compared the prices with their online store and found out that there is a scheme going on where we can get the same 1TB hdd at cheaper rates of around £65 only using some codes etc.

I ordered the same in  Sep 2011 and got the same within 2-3 days time. This is the amazing piece of technology which has kept my data safe till now and I am really happy with my purchase. To add to my love, I ordered the same model for 3 of my friends and they were equally happy with the purchase. 

I hope that as now the 2 years limited warranty will end but my data will remain safe inside the walls of the hard disk.
