Hi Friends,

Castle Lite sent me these amazing goodies bag for their launch event. #SwitchToRenewable In order to ensure that they draw less electricity from the national grid, Castle Lite has announced that it is switching to renewable electricity to brew its beer. With this switch, Africa’s largest premium lite beer is on a journey to make sure that all South Africans are able to enjoy life and their extra cold Castle Lite to the max, without interruption. All seven of their breweries within South Africa contribute to this through solar power, with Alrode brewery in Johannesburg also making use of biogas facilities. As of January – August this year they have already generated over 9.7GWh of renewable electricity. This switch has also resulted in 9 443 tons of Co2 emissions reductions since the start of the year.

#KCA #ZoëLife @Qualcomm Launch #KidzAlive App to Enhance Pediatric HIV Prevention & Treatment #WhenIGrowUp

Hi Friends,

Keep A Child Alive and Zoë-Life, in collaboration with the Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™ Initiative, today launched the KidzAlive Talk Tool App, an innovative mobile health solution that equips healthcare workers to provide age-appropriate HIV education to children and adolescents, as well as their primary caregivers.

Great strides have been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS globally, and while this is particularly true among adults in South Africa, social and structural barriers are leaving children and adolescence behind. Primary caregivers fear to get their children tested because of the possibility of having to disclose an HIV-positive result and the stigma of living with HIV. Healthcare workers are often overwhelmed by the difficult task of talking to young children who are at risk and who require counseling and testing - they express a lack of confidence in how to approach these conversations and often do not have child-friendly job aids to assist in the process.

Innovated by Zoë-Life, the KidzAlive Talk Tool App provides healthcare workers with the support they need to interact with children and their caregivers in an age-appropriate way. Healthcare workers use the app to engage children in the animated journey of a frog named Sibusiso as he goes for HIV testing, learns his positive status and comes to understand the importance of adhering to his treatment.

The app has built-in prompts to assist healthcare workers in guiding children through their own journey of HIV testing, learning their test results, overcoming stigma and learning about prevention and healthy living. The app, which is currently available in three languages, includes interactive games which keep the children focused and engaged and increases their retention of information.

“The KidzAlive Talk Tool App demonstrates a creative and effective way to use mobile technology to improve health services and involve communities in HIV prevention and treatment,” says Antonio Ruiz-Giménez, Jr., Executive Chairman, and CEO, at Keep A Child Alive. “We are very excited about partnering with Qualcomm Wireless Reach on this project.”

In a recent pilot study of the KidzAlive Talk Tool App, 33 healthcare workers at private- and government-healthcare facilities in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal trialed the app following in-depth training. “After their training, healthcare workers experienced a 62 percent increase in confidence and competence in providing age-appropriate counseling and care for HIV-exposed and -infected children,” says Dr. Stephanie Thomas, Executive Director, at Zoë-Life. “Primary caregivers participating in the pilot study were more willing to give consent for their children to receive HIV testing and counseling.”

“At Qualcomm, we believe that advanced mobile technologies have a great role to play in improving access to healthcare services, lowering costs and increasing efficiencies,” says Elizabeth Migwalla, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Africa and the Middle East, Qualcomm International, Inc. “We are proud to collaborate with Zoë-Life and Keep A Child Alive to extend South Africa’s AIDS response to its most vulnerable populations and support the nation’s children in leading healthy lives.”

Zoë-Life is a non-profit organization which believes that unlocking a resilient future for the continent lies in bringing wholeness to its children and youth. To this end, its work revolves around forging pathways to a hopefully future by collectively raising a generation of healthy, productive and fulfilled individuals. The mission of their KidzAlive programme is to bring peace and comfort to children with chronic diseases and to free them from stigma and fear. Zoë-Life is the sub-grantee of Keep A Child Alive, founded in 2003 by AIDS activist Leigh Blake and Grammy Award-winner Alicia Keys to get life-saving medication to children dying of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.

@SamsungSA Empowering Women With Relevant Skills #CSR #SouthAfrica

Hi Friends,

In 1956, 20,000 women marched on the Union Buildings. Sixty-two years later, South Africans both celebrate and honour this important milestone in the nation’s history, by recognising the essential part women play in creating powerful and healthy communities. While there have been enormous changes since then for human rights and the rights of women, there are still areas and sectors where women aren’t naturally included.

According to statistician-general Risenga Maluleke, the unemployment rate for women is higher than that of men, and women are less likely to participate in the labour market.[i] A Stats SA report published in the first quarter of 2018 indicates that “the South African working-age population increased by 153 000 or 0,4 per cent in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the fourth quarter of 2017. The rise in both employment (up by 206 000) and unemployment (up by 100 000) over the quarter led to the rise in the labour force participation rate now standing at 59,3%. The unemployment rate (26,7%) remained unchanged over the first quarter of 2018 compared to the fourth quarter of 2017.”[ii]

In a bid to change the male-dominated landscape of the electronics industry, Samsung have set up the Woman Technical Programme, which has seen numerous disadvantaged women rise above the prospect of unemployment towards a skilled and viable future. To address the gender disparity in the industry and to add to the pool of talented technical specialists required to service and support the growing consumer electronics and mobile phone markets, Samsung encourages women to take part in the technical programme.
@SamsungSA Empowering Women With Relevant Skills #CSR #SouthAfrica
Nithia Pillay, Director: Customer Services at Samsung South Africa, says, “Women have been excluded from the electronics field for far too long. Their natural ability to note intricate details and deliver quality work makes them ideal for this sector.”

Women who form part of Samsung’s Women Technical Programme are between the ages of 18 and 25, are from the townships around Ekurhuleni and have already completed a college qualification. If they have not secured employment, they are then accepted onto the programme. They complete a six-month in-depth technical training course, followed by a month of in-service training. After gaining the technical knowledge they need, students are exposed to the public and taught the ins and outs of client service. Students then return to Samsung’s Women Technical Programme to round out their training. Service Centres can offer the fully trained students permanent employment, providing them with the first stepping stone to a career in the electronics sector.

“Samsung is ensuring that women are taking up more space in the electronics field, a much-needed development that we are proud of. Graduates from the programme are all gainfully employed. With another intake in September this year, the number of skilled women within the electronics sector is set to continue rising,” concludes Pillay.

For South Africa to adequately address the dire unemployment rate in the country, the private sector has to get involved. With initiatives such as Samsung’s Women Technical Programme, which afford women dignified and solid career paths, some hope can be seen for South Africa’s future.

@SamsungSA Continues Support For Female Learners #CSR #Tembisa

Hi Friends,

Samsung South Africa will reaffirm their belief in the power of education by continuing their support for Phomolong Secondary High School. The school, based in Tembisa, Gauteng will once again become the focus of Samsung’s attention during a handover ceremony at the school on 17 October 2018. During this event, Sung Yoon, President & CEO of Samsung Africa, will hand over 55 tablets, a Samsung Smart Board as well as sanitary towels. The occasion will also be attended by founder and CEO of Imbumba Foundation, Richard Mabaso and actor, Clement Maosasa.

“When we empower our female learners we inspire change that impacts families, communities and the country as a whole. Through technology, we can enhance their capacity to learn and spark the imagination of our future leaders and innovators,” says Sung Yoon.

The aim of the handover is two-fold. Firstly, to encourage learners to stay in school by supplying them with sanitary towels Sadly, a lack of access to these necessary hygiene products can impact attendance. Secondly, the 55 tablets and Smart Board are aimed at empowering teachers to improve learning techniques. Samsung has already invested in the school in the past with a solar powered classroom as well as a host of e-learning devices and equipment.
@SamsungSA Continues Support For Female Learners #CSR
The support is aligned with Samsung’s overall vision for encouraging female learners in Africa. Another successful example of using technology to empower young women is Samsung’s Engineering Academies. Enthusiastic learners armed with a matric certificate, with mathematics and science on higher grade, have been able to take that all-important step into the world of technology. Students, who have come from the same backgrounds as those in Tembisa, are taken through a technical training course followed by a month of in-service training. After gaining the knowledge they need, they are can walk proudly out of the academy, better equipped to reach their greatest goals. Additionally, the students have the opportunity to work for Samsung.

“Samsung is committed to creating learning environments that reflect the world we live in. We believe Africa can lead the world with ground-breaking technologies and visionary thinking. Schools like Phomolong are filled with minds that have the potential to lead the technological revolution,” says Yoon.

Women Technical Programme Empowers 16 #Electronics #Technicians @SamsungSA

Hi Guys,

In the electronics repair industry, a field where 99% of employees are men, Samsung Electronics South Africa has begun making inroads into these numbers with its Samsung Women Technical Programme. The first 16 graduates of what will be an ongoing programme have recently begun working at Samsung’s various service centres.

The Samsung Women Technical Programme is an initiative that started in November 2015, when 20 female students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds were chosen from a group of some 200 at the Samsung Engineering Academy in Ekurhuleni. These young women had already undergone training on Samsung’s various products and appliances and were then selected for the first-ever training programme specifically for handheld devices.

“They were trained on how to repair various mobile device models, how to conduct updates to software, as well as the different aspects around fixing hardware. The idea was to turn these young women into qualified cell phone technicians,” says Samsung’s Director: SSA Service, Richard Chetty.
Women Technical Programme Empowers 16 #Electronics #Technicians @SamsungSA
“The 16 young ladies who graduated from this course are certified to work on Samsung cell phones and they have been placed at a number of our service centres, where they will undergo a year of practical work in order to gain necessary and valuable experience. Following a final assessment, they will be certified as technicians, which will open up a meaningful career path to them.”

Chetty adds that while similar training programmes have been established in the industry, there is also a tendency for the hosting company’s responsibility to end when the trainees start their careers. However, he indicates that Samsung believes in focusing on things for the longer term, which is why the organisation will remain closely involved in the future development and occupational paths of these graduates.

“Most importantly, these young ladies are merely the trailblazers of what we hope will become a flood of young female technical learners in South Africa. We are planning to have three intakes every year for women, although each intake will cover a different product focus area,” he explains.

“For example, a course focusing on larger appliances will require the learners to have a valid driver’s licence. In this way, they will not only learn how to service the appliances but will be trained and certified as in-home technicians.”

Chetty states that Samsung is considering the bigger picture with courses of this nature. They are designed to develop skills and create jobs and will even include training in aspects of entrepreneurship so that future graduates have the opportunity to set up small businesses of their own.

“As a leader in South Africa, Samsung is committed to our responsibility toward our community and our goal of positively impacting on people’s lives. Our Samsung Women Technical Programme proves that job creation, skills development and women empowerment can be achieved. We want to encourage other corporate organisations to contribute to the economy and job creation by getting involved in similar schemes. Samsung is leading the way and we hope others will follow,” concludes Chetty.

@SamsungSA Donates #Smartphones To @GiftoftheGivers #NGO #CSR

Hi Guys,

Samsung Electronics South Africa has donated 31 smartphones to a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Gift of the Givers South Africa, in an effort to support communications within the association’s emergency teams.

Badr Kazi, Corporate Liaison Manager at Gift of the Givers South Africa, says that advanced and reliable mobile connectivity is crucial for the organisation’s various specialist teams. “When our workers are assisting at the scene of a crisis, effective communications is quite simply a matter of life and death,” he says.
@SamsungSA Donates #Smartphones To @GiftoftheGivers
Kazi explains that Gift of the Givers teams must coordinate their operations under extreme conditions, often where telecommunications and power infrastructure has been destroyed. “With the assistance of our sponsors, we typically set up a portable hot spot and organise our operations using mobile phones. In a situation such as the aftermath of a natural catastrophe, these mobile phones have to be very reliable, rugged and easy to use, as well as deliver long battery life. We were therefore delighted to receive the advanced smartphones from Samsung, which meet every requirement we have for communications in areas that have experienced devastation.”

Samsung donated a range of handsets with features ideal for this nature of critical work. Among them were the Galaxy K Zoom, a phone-camera hybrid with a 20.7 MP camera ideal for recording and sharing information about critical scenes and the Chat 333, with automatic chat group features ideal for collaborative communications by teams.

“Samsung smartphones’ durable design, a broad range of intelligent features and long-lasting batteries will make them invaluable tools for supporting the important work Gift of the Givers rescue teams carry out. We always aim to be a catalyst to the betterment of people’s lives and are particularly proud of this initiative due to its potential to positively impact so many,” says Michelle Potgieter, Director: Corporate Marketing and Communications at Samsung Electronics South Africa.
@SamsungSA Donates #Smartphones To @GiftoftheGivers #TheLifesWay #Photoyatra
Gift of the Givers has a large team comprising disaster, emergency and ambulance services units. The response workers, led by Head of Search and Rescue Dr Ahmed Bham, have attended serious incidents around the world, including launching field operations during the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and setting up hospitals in Syria.

“We are extremely grateful to Samsung for this donation, which will go a long way to ensuring our workers are able to operate effectively in affected areas. Our management services will benefit greatly from advanced mobile capabilities we now have access to,” continues Kazi.

Samsung Electronics is a company that makes incredibly smart devices in an effort to simplify the everyday lives of people globally, as well as a responsible corporate organisation and active contributor to our communities. This partnership embodies our ethos and commitment to these values,” Potgieter concludes.

Safe-Hub #Diepsloot @TsogoSun @MonteCasinoZA AMANDLA EduFootball

Hi Guys,

A Safe-Hub that will give approximately 2000 youngster from grades R to matric in Diepsloot north of Johannesburg regular access to a safe environment for facilitated sports, arts, life skills lessons, personal development, accredited training courses – and the opportunity for a better future – was officially launched on 3 February at Muzomuhle Primary School.

The Diepsloot Safe-Hub was funded and built by AMANDLA EduFootball (AMANDLA) in collaboration with the Oliver Kahn Foundation and Tsogo Sun’s flagship entertainment destination, Montecasino, as part of its CSI activities. The implementation of the on-going programme will be delivered by AMANDLA through a funding partnership with Montecasino, representing an investment of close on R4 million over three years, together with other potential partners. This is the third Safe-Hub in South Africa and the first in Johannesburg. The other two are located in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu-Manenberg in the Western Cape.

AMANDLA is an international Non-Profit Organisation and owner of the internationally acclaimed Safe-Hub model, whose mission is to create safe spaces that bring together the power of football and learning to empower youth and change lives. The Safe-Hubs provide a comprehensive, integrated set of youth development services in collaboration with the local community, using football as the key driver of engagement and retention.

Each Safe-Hub acts as a multi-purpose community hub where people can access a range of education, health, accredited training and enterprise development services, providing a viable and attractive alternative for young people to get involved in positive activities. At Safe-Hubs young people are encouraged to explore their individuality, build a core set of values, and strengthen their ability to deal with the challenges they face in life. At AMANDLA’s two Safe-Hubs in Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, research shows that the programmes there have resulted in a reduction of 44% in crime and violence within the Safe-Hubs’ catchment areas and a 49% improvement in maths and English school results.

The new Safe-Hub in Diepsloot will offer a wide set of youth development activities, and will incorporate a range of existing programmes that Montecasino is already running in several schools in Diepsloot. These include athletics, chess and arts, all of which are designed as a platform for growth for young people.

Florian Zech, Founder of AMANDLA EduFootball, says, “Our experience and research tells us that we cannot achieve sustainable impact in marginalised communities without in-depth collaboration. We are delighted to have been able to partner with the Oliver Kahn Foundation and Tsogo Sun and Montecasino to bring the Safe-Hub to Diepsloot. The ability to bring together partners from all sectors allows us create lasting change among our youth and communities – and today marks the first exciting step on this journey.”

Says Montecasino GM, Glenn Joseph, “Diepsloot is on our doorstep, it is home to many of our staff members and is a focus area for many of our CSI initiatives. The safe-hub will provide a welcome and safe environment for positive development, fun, and stimulating activities for children and young people.” The easy accessibility of Diepsloot from Montecasino also provides Montecasino and Tsogo Sun head office staff members with opportunities to volunteer at the safe-hub, helping out with the range of activities on offer.

Muzomuhle Primary School was chosen as the ideal site for the Safe-Hub as Montecasino has been working with the school, offering various programmes, for more than four years. “The school governing body has always been positive and enthusiastic about our involvement – and they welcomed the opportunity to increase their contribution to the children of the community by providing the premises for the safe-hub. The school is also the biggest and oldest in Diepsloot, with more than 2 300 learners from grades R to 7, and it is in a central location, making it accessible to young people from all over Diepsloot,” says Joseph.

Substantial progress has already been made in the development of the Diepsloot Safe-Hub. Phase one, which comprised the football component, kicked off in December, while plans and preparations for phase two were finalised. Key appointments were made, including that of Thobekile Buthelezi as manager of the Diepsloot Safe-Hub, along with two members of the Diepsloot community who are being mentored to become facilitators to run the football and life skills activities.

Phase two, designed pro bono by South African architectural firm DHK will be completed during 2017, comprises a two-storey building on the school premises where the arts and sports life skills lessons, a youth café, a computer lab, and other personal development initiatives will take place. “We are already in discussion with other organisations and corporates about collaborations on programmes that will contribute to the development of the youth in Diepsloot,” says Joseph. For example, it is envisaged that the youth café will be a conduit for accredited training in the food & beverage sector, in skills such as cooking, waitering, and other possible job opportunities. Security company, Servest, has come on board and is providing security for the premises, and a major corporate is considering establishing a computer lab, with appropriate facilities and services for training.

“We are exceptionally excited about this opportunity to make a real difference in thousands of young lives – working with professional and committed partners, such as AMANDLA, who are as passionate as we are about providing a platform for children to gain skills, to grow, to learn, to adopt healthy values, and to be themselves and have fun,” he says. “We look forward to working with the Diepsloot community and seeing this safe-hub have a real impact on it, providing tangible opportunities for brighter futures for many youngsters.”
