About The Children’s Hospital Trust
The Children's Hospital Trust was established in 1994 to fundraise for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and in 2011 expanded its reach to fundraise for paediatric healthcare in the Western Cape and beyond. Since 1994, the Trust has proudly assisted the Hospital to upgrade its buildings and equipment and to develop its professional staff. 100% of all donations go directly to the Hospital and prioritised paediatric healthcare needs, and not a single cent is spent on administration costs. The Trust is a non-profit organisation that relies on the benevolence of donors to realise its aims and objectives. It enjoys a record of sound financial administration and good governance, but whilst it has raised funds to address many pressing needs, much has yet to be done. www.childrenshospitaltrust.org.za.

About The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital

The Hospital provides training to paediatric healthcare professionals from the entire sub-continent and does important research into the illnesses of childhood, which has a global impact.

@SamsungSA Donates #Smartphones To @GiftoftheGivers #NGO #CSR

Hi Guys,

Samsung Electronics South Africa has donated 31 smartphones to a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Gift of the Givers South Africa, in an effort to support communications within the association’s emergency teams.

Badr Kazi, Corporate Liaison Manager at Gift of the Givers South Africa, says that advanced and reliable mobile connectivity is crucial for the organisation’s various specialist teams. “When our workers are assisting at the scene of a crisis, effective communications is quite simply a matter of life and death,” he says.

Kazi explains that Gift of the Givers teams must coordinate their operations under extreme conditions, often where telecommunications and power infrastructure has been destroyed. “With the assistance of our sponsors, we typically set up a portable hot spot and organise our operations using mobile phones. In a situation such as the aftermath of a natural catastrophe, these mobile phones have to be very reliable, rugged and easy to use, as well as deliver long battery life. We were therefore delighted to receive the advanced smartphones from Samsung, which meet every requirement we have for communications in areas that have experienced devastation.”

Samsung donated a range of handsets with features ideal for this nature of critical work. Among them were the Galaxy K Zoom, a phone-camera hybrid with a 20.7 MP camera ideal for recording and sharing information about critical scenes and the Chat 333, with automatic chat group features ideal for collaborative communications by teams.

“Samsung smartphones’ durable design, a broad range of intelligent features and long-lasting batteries will make them invaluable tools for supporting the important work Gift of the Givers rescue teams carry out. We always aim to be a catalyst to the betterment of people’s lives and are particularly proud of this initiative due to its potential to positively impact so many,” says Michelle Potgieter, Director: Corporate Marketing and Communications at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

Gift of the Givers has a large team comprising disaster, emergency and ambulance services units. The response workers, led by Head of Search and Rescue Dr Ahmed Bham, have attended serious incidents around the world, including launching field operations during the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and setting up hospitals in Syria.

“We are extremely grateful to Samsung for this donation, which will go a long way to ensuring our workers are able to operate effectively in affected areas. Our management services will benefit greatly from advanced mobile capabilities we now have access to,” continues Kazi.

“Samsung Electronics is a company that makes incredibly smart devices in an effort to simplify the everyday lives of people globally, as well as a responsible corporate organisation and active contributor to our communities. This partnership embodies our ethos and commitment to these values,” Potgieter concludes.

Why Are We Hungrier In #Winters? @KelloggsZA #KelloggsBFBD

Hi Guys,

As South Africa goes through its winter months, many are experiencing the hunger and food cravings that occur as the days turn colder. As temperatures fall, our appetite seems to spiral out of control - but why is it that we are hungrier in winter?

Studies have shown that as outdoor temperatures drop, the body temperature drops and that is what actually sets up a longing for foods that will warm you the quickest. Shivering triggers a self-preservation mode that sends our body a message to heat up fast. Although all food, including fruits and vegetables, will help create the extra heat we crave, for most it’s the traditional comfort foods that we turn to when it gets colder.1

"In winter we are likely to drink more hot beverages. If using more than a teaspoon of sugar, this could be problematic for weight management. Couple this with a biscuit or two and this can drastically increase your normal energy intake," says Kwa Zulu Natal-based registered dietician Kelly Francis.
While for some it is falling temperatures that sets appetites in motion, for others, it's the decrease in sunlight and an onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) - a type of depression caused by a decrease in light exposure. Predominantly, it occurs in winter but disappears as the days get longer in spring and summer. Those who suffer from SAD seek quick sources of serotonin, which come from carb-heavy meals.

“High fibre carbohydrate breakfast choices, with the addition of protein rich dairy provide sustained energy, naturally stabilizing blood glucose levels and the appetite,” Francis added.
Although our appetites have increased this winter, for many children in South Africa, hunger is a reality they face every day, every season. Today almost one in five children in South Africa goes to school without breakfast, which has a direct impact on their growth and development. Winter temperatures also further increase children’s ability to fight off illness, meaning more learners are sick and missing school in the winter months.2

Kellogg’s South Africa aims to combat this issue with its Breakfasts for Better Days™ initiative. The initiative is continuing to spread the importance message of staying healthy by providing children across the country with a balanced breakfast, giving them the vital fuel they need to learn effectively.

Since the programme’s launch in 2014, over 13 million breakfasts have been served up, with 25 000 children getting a balanced breakfast every school day in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. The breakfast offerings include Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Instant Porridge, which provides energy and warmth during the winter.

SADAG - Making Mental Health Matter - 20 years Anniversary Dinner

Hi Guys,

Some organization starts with the determination of a single person and brings a lot of hope and happiness in the lives of many. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is also one of such organizations bringing change in the lives of many. Crisis Line number is 0800567567
SADAG has Crisis Centres, School Programmes and Rural Outreach Projects.
The organization is celebrating their 20 years this year as it was setup in 1994 by Zane Wilson. It was her efforts to help others after suffering from acute panic and anxiety herself. It's a problem that is faced by anyone and everyone no matter who you are. Recently we have seen many big hollywood filmstars and singers die of depression. They had all the money and luxuries of the world but still they chose death as the last venue so it's always relationships or someone to speak to that matters most. We all crave for appreciation, care and love throughout our lives.
They celebrated their 20 years Anniversary Dinner by auctioning some of the great art work, jewellery, books and other deals at Metro Restaurant, Benmore, Johannesburg.
Here is Aki Anastasiou who was the MC for the evening along with Auctioneer too.
Zane Wilson was given standing ovation for all her efforts for the last 20 years to bring this organization so far and to help thousands of families all around Africa and other countries. Kindly donate or become a volunteer for this organization at www.sadag.org Follow them on twitter or facebook.

Cheers!!!
