In recent years, the gaming scene in Africa has seen remarkable growth, and is expected to grow by roughly 12% between 2018 and 2028* - this trend is realising each year at Comic Con Africa’s gaming experience. This long weekend, gaming enthusiasts from all walks of life will converge at Comic Con Africa where the worlds of gaming and pop culture will collide in spectacular fashion.

This is what gamers can expect from the Comic Con Africa gaming experience:

The Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE) and Nintendo Partner Up!

The Toyota Gaming Engine is home to all Toyota esports action from South Africa, the world and beyond. For Comic Con Africa this weekend, TTGE has partnered with Nintendo to bring attendees an immersive Mario Kart experience and a chance to win a trip to Chicago for C2E2.

More than the partnership, Nintendo will also have the biggest Nintendo title of the year, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, playable on their stand at Comic Con Africa before its official release next month!

Telkom VS Gaming Next-Gen Gaming Village

This exciting partnership between Telkom VS Gaming and Comic Con Africa promises an unforgettable blend of gaming and pop culture for Comic-Con enthusiasts. Whether you're a dedicated gamer or a casual fan, this area on the gaming floor offers a unique opportunity to join like-minded individuals in a legendary gathering.

The Telkom VS Gaming Next-Gen Village offers fans the opportunity to win exciting prizes and get the opportunity to meet renowned South African gamers such as Okay Wasabi, Sibu Mpanza, Julia "Bish" Robson, and Pippa Tshabalala.

Throughout the year, VS Gaming runs online leagues for various gaming titles and those competing in this year’s finals, which is hosted at Comic Con Africa, stand to win their share of over R600 000. Fans can expect an exciting line-up of esports tournaments at Comic Con Africa 2023, including the VS Gaming Masters and other of South Africa's top esports leagues.

Doritos Crunch Cup, powered by Comic Con Africa

The Doritos Crunch Cup, in partnership with Comic Con Africa, is back in Johannesburg for its third iteration which will see gamers of all levels go head-to-head for cash prizes this long weekend. This section of the con floor boasts free-to-play tournaments each day for a different game. With a wide array of genres that fans can compete in, the titles are:

• Friday, 22 September – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II,
• Saturday, 23 September – FIFA 23,
• Sunday, 24 September – Street Fighter 6, and
• Monday, 25 September (public holiday) – Fortnite

To participate in the Doritos Crunch Cup, players can simply register on-site at Comic Con Africa starting from 9:00 AM at the Doritos Crunch Zone in Hall 5 on the morning they wish to compete. Beyond the mainline daily tournaments, the Doritos Crunch Cup provides festivalgoers with a unique opportunity to "Beat the Pro" each day. This feature allows fans to showcase their skills against a professional player in each title, with the chance to win R1000 if they emerge victorious in the head-to-head battle.

Red Bull

Red Bull will be hosting a leg of the Red Bull Campus Clutch, an open tournament exclusively for college and university students across the world, in the popular game Valorant – a team-based 5 vs. 5 shooters, where communication and teamwork are essential.

Comic Con Africa will host the Red Bull Campus Clutch national finals, with the winner being sent to compete internationally at the global finals against teams from around the world, which takes place in Istanbul, Turkey.

Carry1st Valorant Tournament

Following Riot Games’ announcement of Valorant servers coming to South Africa, The Carry1st Valorant Tournament also promises thrilling gameplay. Carry1st will host Valorant in-person activations at Comic Con this long weekend. During the event, players can learn about Valorant, participate in tournaments, and win exclusive giveaways.

In addition to Nintendo offering fans the opportunity to experience Super Mario Bros. Wonder, fans can also expect an activation from the recently released Mortal Kombat 1 as well as an exclusive preview of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage - presented by GLITCHED.

School gaming is serious gaming!

RGB Gaming will also attend Comic Con Africa, a proud sponsor of the initiative, and will bring daily school tournaments to the gaming hall across titles such as Minecraft, Splatoon, Apex Legends, and FIFA. This area of the show floor is proud to welcome 30 primary schools and 10 university teams; be sure not to miss this electrifying clash of young talents and future gaming legends as they showcase their skills on the big stage.

Fans at the show will also be able to experience a variety of tech, gaming products, and peripherals from KooDoo, as well as other vendors.

Comic Con Africa, the continent's ultimate pop culture and gaming festival, is set to take over the Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec) with a bang over Heritage Day weekend next month. The highly anticipated festival promises fans an unforgettable experience, packed with a diverse array of entertainment, celebrity appearances, loads of shopping opportunities, and even exclusive merchandise. As Comic Con Africa gears up for its fifth edition, here are 10 things to expect from the event:

One: The KFC Main Stage and the Pop Culture Hall

The KFC main stage of Comic Con Africa is the epicentre of the festival, featuring a lineup of exciting guests set to engage fans in interactive Q&A panels where audience members can learn more about their favourite films, series, and creators. For Comic Con Africa, so far those guests include, with more being announced soon:

• Anthony Daniels – C-3PO from Star Wars
• Veronica Taylor – The original English voice of Ash Ketchum from Pokémon
• Ross Marquand – Aaron from The Walking Dead, as well as Red Skull from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game

The main stage will also host spot prizes, interactive gaming sessions, winner announcements, as well as cosplay competitions including the ever-exciting Comic Con Africa Championships of Cosplay. Located in Hall 6, this bustling hub of activity, will house various attractions, including kid-friendly activities making it the ultimate family day out.

Attendees can also look forward to opportunities for community building in dedicated pockets of the hall. More than the main stage, Hall 6 will also house a Pop Culture Content Zone for additional workshops, fan meet-ups, and activities.

Two: Gaming Galore – Tournaments, free-to-play zones, and accessories

Vendors will offer the latest gaming accessories and merchandise with some show exclusive deals, while the Telkom VS Gaming Village will host tournaments spanning popular titles like FIFA, and Rocket League. This village will also contain South Africa’s largest eSports tournament – The Telkom VS Masters – featuring games such as CS:GO. For mobile gaming enthusiasts, an exciting mobile gaming experience also awaits in this space.

Comic Con Africa is also excited to welcome the voice of Mozzie from Rainbow Six: Siege, Martin Copping, who is also the voice of Lucas Riggs from Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Three: Cosplay

Since 2018, Africa has gained recognition in the global cosplay scene, with South African cosplayers Kinpatsu Cosplay, Jinxie Cosplay, and Ludus Cosplay consistently excelling at the prestigious Crown Championships of Cosplay in Chicago. Whether you're a casual or competitive cosplayer, Comic Con Africa has something for everyone, making it a must-attend event on the cosplay calendar.

Comic Con Africa will also host casual cosplay competitions with multiple daily sessions, including a special session for contestants under 13, offering a chance to win spot prizes. The event also features the Nintendo Cosplay Competition, adding a gaming twist to the cosplay scene. For those aspiring to compete professionally, Comic Con Africa hosts the Championships of Cosplay, where hand-crafted character outfits are rigorously judged. Four: Artist Alley

With over 150 artists in Hall 7, The Artist Alley is the heartbeat of any Comic Con event, and Comic Con Africa is no exception. Here, fans can admire breathtaking artwork, gain inspiration, exchange creative techniques, and even purchase or commission unique pieces from talented vendors.

Notable and iconic artists such as Nooligan (USA) will be attending the show as well as local authors Sam Beckbessinger and Dave Halvorsen (co-authors of Girls of Little Hope) who will be among the many creatives showcasing their work in the Artist Alley.

With an extensive lineup of vendors spanning three halls of the Expo Centre, Comic Con Africa offers fans a shopper's paradise. Step into the heart of the action on the Comic Con Africa festival floor, for the first ever iteration of Otaku Town! This immersive zone is a love letter to all things anime and Japanese culture. Dive into a world of mesmerising exhibits, tantalise your taste buds with authentic Japanese cuisine, and let the vibrant universe of anime sweep you off your feet. Guest that will feature near this area include popular YouTubers Akidearest as well as The Anime Man.

Seven: Tabletop Gaming

Whether you're a seasoned board game connoisseur or a curious novice, the tabletop gaming zone is a realm where imagination knows no bounds. Gather your friends, roll the dice and dive into a world of intricate strategy, cunning tactics, and boundless fun.

In partnership with Solarpop, Comic Con Africa is proud to welcome free play, demos, and learn-to-play sessions for iconic tabletop gaming titles such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, as well as Magic: The Gathering. Comic Con Africa will also host Catan Nationals.

This area in Hall 7 also calls for fans to enjoy a free two-hour Dungeons & Dragons journey into a world of magic and monsters where newcomers can also enjoy 20-minute introductions to start their quest.

Eight: Local Celebrities Spotlight

This year, Comic Con Africa will also be celebrating homegrown talent that's been making waves both locally and on the international stage, welcoming celebrities such as Cameron Scott (Ring of Beasts, The Bachelorette, and more)

Comic Con Africa is also proud to host heavy-hitter local comic book artists such as Karl Mostert, Sean Izaakse, and more to be announced soon on the festival’s social media channels.

Nine: MASSIVE Outdoor entertainment

Disney Interactive announced that the Star Wars™ universe will join Disney, Disney•Pixar and Marvel in Disney Infinity 3.0: Play Without Limits – the latest installment of the best-selling “hybrid toy / video game” of 2014. The Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars™ Starter Pack will be available this spring, and Disney Infinity 3.0 promises to deliver kids and families with a wider breadth of content and variety of gameplay than ever offered from Disney Infinity, including: 

 Three Star Wars™ Play Sets, one set in the timeline of Episodes I-III, the second set during the original trilogy, Episodes IV-VI, and the third available this winter based on Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™

Additional Play Sets offering distinct gameplay and environments, including a Disney•Pixar Play Set based on the upcoming film Inside Out, and a Marvel Play Set featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and other Marvel character.

Each of the Star Wars™ Play Sets offers distinct experiences, with varied gameplay, environments and characters. The Star Wars™: Twilight of the Republic Play Set takes place in the height of the Jedi’s powers, where players will use the Force™ and Lightsabers™ in epic battles and master their combat skills alongside Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Darth Maul. The Star Wars™: Rise Against the Empire Play Set will take players on galaxy-spanning missions with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader, piloting X-wing fighters or the Millennium Falcon to fight stormtroopers, or exploring and partaking in land-based missions on planets like Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor. Disney Infinity 3.0: Play Without Limits is being developed by Avalanche Software in partnership with Ninja Theory, Sumo Digital, Studio Gobo and United Front Games, and will be available for the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system and Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Wii U™ system from Nintendo, PC and iOS and Android devices.

The Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars™ Starter Pack will include the Disney Infinity Base and Disney Infinity 3.0 video game software, the Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker character figures, and a web code card that unlocks content for PC and mobile devices. Other Disney Infinity 3.0 Play Sets, figures, and Toy Box Expansion Games will be sold separately.

Product Review - Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is an action/adventure game will take players deep into the Marvel Universe with classic characters and original storyline. The game allows players more opportunity for unprecedented freedom and endless possibilities to create new adventures themselves.

In Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, players use real-world interactive Marvel figures to activate original storylines (Play Sets) in the virtual game worlds of some of Marvel’s most popular franchises, including The Avengers. In the Play Sets, players are able to take on the role of more than 20 Marvel characters including Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye to battle enemies, complete challenging missions, solve puzzles and ultimately save the world from destruction. 

I played the characters of Thor, Black Widow, Spiderman & Iron Man and totally fell in love with them. Each has his own unique powers and limitations so deciding what you want to play with against which enemy is really great. This is great if you want to test some of the rival enemies against other MARVEL Super hero. I am not that good with Microsoft XBOX remote when I tried it but I will be buying the game to play on my Nintendo Wii or whenever I buy Sony PS3/PS4 and get rid of my ages old Sony PS2. I got the Hawk Eye as a gift to attend the premier of the game but I won't be able to use it unless I have the whole Starter Pack. 

Featuring an enhanced Toy Box mode, Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes has introduced new structured, franchise-themed adventures that players can customize and play using any in-game character from across the Disney Infinity universe. POWER DISCS – New set of circular and hexagonal Power Discs will be available for Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes. Circular discs will add costumes, Area of Effect attacks and team-ups. Hexagonal power discs will add new weapons, vehicles and sky and terrain customizations. Power discs are the most coolest feature ever as you never know what you are going to get inside the sealed package. These can totally change the whole environment of the game altogether or can give your character an extra power to keep up to the enemy unlimited powers.
