Samsung is definitely on a roll creating products in all kinds of price ranges and segments to capture the market as the new brands come to South Africa to cut into the share of Samsung using the same kind of configurations and after-sales services. I received this smartphone from Samsung for review and I immediately fell in love with the colour of the smartphone. I was not aware of the phone being launched and only came to know about it once I received the press release of it being launched in the country.
The packaging is really simple and the pack only mentions the smartphone name in the colour of your choice and I received the review unit in MINT colour in the 64GB variant and it's a dual-SIM (nano-SIM) smartphone. The phone comes with a power adapter along with a Type-C cable and earphones are also included as the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack. It's the normal earphones in ages-old shape with the microphone built-in the cable. The whole package is retailed for around R4000 in South Africa for an LTE version whereas the 5G version is priced at R4500. If you want to spend around R4k in the market, you will find a lot of options and the next step will be the brand value and after-sales experience is what you need to focus on.
Samsung Galaxy A22 comes in 3 colour variants - Black, Mint and Violet. The memory capacity variants are also available from 64GB and 128GB based on your usage and needs. The first thing you will notice is the amazing eye-catching colours this smartphone has in its glossy plastic body. By no means you will feel that it's a value segment smartphone and will make your eyes turn as you use it in your day to day life. The whole smartphone weighs around 186 grams only. The body really feels light and you will never feel you are carrying a device.
128 GB offers 103 GB for consumers and the rest is blocked by Samsung software. The smartphone also offers external memory support for microSD cards up to 1TB but it's advisable for me that you buy a Samsung one or Sandisk one with high transfer speed. The phone comes with 4GB RAM which makes the octa-core processor (MediaTek Helio G85) perform amazingly well.
The next thing to notice is the Quad camera setup on this Galaxy A22 which has this square design where all of the 4 lenses are placed and looks amazingly beautiful. There is a macro camera (2MP, f2.4), an ultra-wide camera (8MP, f2.2), the main camera with OIS (48MP, f1.8) and a depth camera (2MP, f2.4). The ultra-wide camera is able to cover the 123-degree angle of view to capture a lot around you in that mode. All of them together brings the Samsung Galaxy S21 like picture clarity in the hands at one-fourth of the money paid for any Samsung top of the top smartphone.
I never felt that I am using a smartphone that is not capable but it's now my skill to make the best out of this quad-camera setup. Selfies are amazingly great with the front camera of 13MP (f2.2). A slow-motion video capability is also an added advantage at 120fps@HD quality and normal video quality will be FHD at 30fps.
Samsung Galaxy A22 has a display that is 6.4inch with Super AMOLED HD+ display quality and all the games, pictures and videos look really nice. The main display has a colour depth of 16M colours and also has a refresh rate of 90Hz which is never seen before in a price bracket of smartphones before. Samsung has really improved on the displays available at the value segment smartphones using software and hardware upgrades. I reviewed the LTE version and there is a 5G version available in the market at a price difference of only R500. Charging the phone is via the Type-C USB cable and the phone has a 3.5mm stereo jack. NFC is also enabled in the smartphone so that you can use the Samsung Pay on the go.
The battery capacity on Galaxy A22 is 5000mAh Li-Polymer battery which is a general trend on the value segment smartphones as seen in the market. Based on my usage it could last me a full day as I was using it as a secondary smartphone as a hotspot sharing device as well as taking some photos, using Google Maps and watching Youtube videos. Also, Samsung Galaxy A22 offers up to 15W of adaptive fast charge too and on my old 15W charging adapter, it could charge the same in about 2 hours fully.
Samsung is a provider of Android smartphones (Android 11) with One UI 3.1 user interface. This phone has a radio app for those who love to listen to their favourite radio stations using the earphones working as an antenna. I really loved the device and gave me a lot of pleasure to use it without taking care of the same as with expensive smartphones you need to be always watchful about the same. I am sharing some of the photos taken using the device here for your viewing pleasure and to check on the quality of the Quad camera.

I have been a fan of the S series and the Note Series of Samsung Mobile Devices and this was my first ever A series which I used as my day to day device for some time. A long ago, I gifted my mom a brand new A5 (2016) which lasted her 4 years before dying its natural death last year. Overall, this is a go-to phone from Monday to Friday as you sail the weekend too with the new Galaxy A22 smartphone.
