Hiring a DJ is not only costly, but it can also end in disaster as soon as the DJ stops ‘reading the room’ and starts spinning those golden oldies that lost their sheen decades ago. Avoid the awkward silences, beats that fall flat and set your own vibe with Spotify’s handy tips below on how to get your guests moving to the best summer tunes.

The many viral dance challenges that have taken the music scene by storm over the past year also make the best icebreakers. There is no way you won’t get your guests moving to Drake’s In My Feelings with everyone yelling, “Kiki do you love me…!” at the top of their lungs.

So now you’ve got the party started and want to keep it going with an amazing playlist of the biggest local and international songs, what do you add to your list? Well, according to Spotify’s list of the most streamed songs and artists by South African audiences since launch*, if you’re going to include any artist on your playlist Drake is a must, as he is both the most popular artist, and has the most popular for South African audiences. (Drake was also the most streamed artist on Spotify’s Top Global Songs of Summer 2018, in the northern hemisphere.)

If you’d like to add some local flair to your playlist, Spotify recommends some of the top South African house, hip-hop, and pop artists. The most-streamed SA artists since launch, broken down by streams in South Africa and the rest of the world, are Nasty C, AKA and Jeremy Loops as the top three artists, respectively. Local favorites, Shekhinah, DJ Maphorisa, Lady Zamar, Black Coffee and Distruction Boyz also made an appearance on the top 20 list.

Now that you have an idea of where to start when creating your playlist all you have to do is sign up to Spotify, for free, at spotify.com. Once you’ve completed the first step below, you’re well on your way to a great party with nothing but the best songs to keep it going. Let’s get started!

· Make your selection
Whether your event is a small relaxed affair or a highly polished event, your choice of music will have the largest impact on the overall mood of the event and guests. Knowing what your guests will like and the type of atmosphere you want to create is essential for striking the perfect musical balance.

To create a playlist, go to www.spotify.com and follow these simple steps:

1. Sign up (if you haven’t already)
2. Click new playlist on the bottom left-hand corner
3. Use Spotify’s browse feature to explore different genres & moods
4. Tap the ‘more button’ (…)
5. Tap add to playlist
6. Repeat step 4 and 5 until you are happy with the selection you have made

· Let the music play on
No one likes awkward silences, so ensure you give your playlist that professional DJ touch by making use of Spotify’s crossfade feature. Crossfade lets you eliminate the silence between tracks so your music never stops. Simply turn this feature on under advanced settings on your app. To enable Crossfade:

1. Click on the menu next to your name
2. Go into settings
3. Scroll down and click show advanced settings
4. Under playback, switch crossfade songs on – button will turn green
5. Move the slider to select the desired crossfade length

· RSVP Collaboration
Get your guests involved right from the beginning by having them RSVP with their top three favorite tracks and add these to the playlist. This way everyone will have a moment at the event when their song comes on. You can achieve this by creating a collaborative playlist. To create a collaborative playlist: Click the ‘more button’ (…) and select a collaborative playlist – make sure there is a tick next to it. You have the option to share your playlist as a link, which you could include in your e-invite, or use on your favorite social media platform.

· Co-DJing
Everyone loves making a special request, so when that time of the evening comes and some other tracks spring to mind, or the evening takes a nostalgic turn, why not give your guests access to a tablet or two. They can then browse the song they want to hear and add it to the collaborative playlist you created as part of the RSVP process.

· Personalise your collaborative playlist
Personalize your playlist by uploading a picture of your event invitation as well as adding important information about it in the description box. This guarantees that your guests don’t end up on the wrong playlist – in case there is another one that is similarly named.

Best of all the party playlist lives on - you can add the link to the thank you emails or pass onto guests after the event as a memory of an incredible occasion.

Mystic India - An Explosion Of Colour, Energy And Culture #Durban #Jozi #April

If the reviews from international critics are anything to go by, the South African audience is in for a treat as the festive Bollywood music and dance spectacular, Mystic India, hits the stage at the Durban ICC on the 23rd April and at The Teatro Montecasino from the 29th April to 1st May 2016. Seen by over half a million people during countless worldwide performances and tours, Mystic India is an internationally acclaimed Bollywood music and dance spectacular based on the concept of ancient India’s transition into modern India. 

Featuring some 22 talented musicians, brilliant dancers, mind-boggling aerialists and acrobats, as well as 750 lavish costume changes, the show is bound to keep you at the edge of your seat. The flamboyant costumes and extravagant sets have been custom-designed in India’s film capital by a team of 40 creative designers and collaborators over the course of the last four years. 

This production intertwines a mesmerising combo: Traditional India meets the urban streets of Mumbai and New York. It is hip and trendy with all the glitter and bling to make it an all-out sensory sensation. This feast showcases Bollywood at its finest and audiences can brace themselves for an explosion of colour and energy. Audience members will be invited along for a festive journey through Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, and even through the evolution of Bollywood films via a visual display that fuses dance, theatre and special effects. 

The celebratory production is directed and choreographed by the prominent choreographer and production master, Amit Shah, and produced by US-based AATMA Performing Arts, of which Shah is the founder and creative director. Shah is known for his critical eye and creative disposition, and has many years of experience in the world of dance, theatre and media. He has worked on Bollywood film sets with top actors and his choreography has been featured on stage with Miss World Priyanka Chopra, as well as in several films and music videos. 

Talking about Mystic India, Amit says, “If you have ever wanted to visit India, this production is your direct flight there. Mystic India will blow you all the way to the small villages of India to the fast-paced streets of Mumbai and New York. Audiences will get it all!” 

The female lead of Mystic India, Kruti Shah, is an internationally distinguished dancer and choreographer who shot to fame as a Top 10 finalist on the dance reality show, Just Dance. While intensively training in modern forms of movement, such as ballet, pointe, tap, hip-hop, jazz and modern, Kruti also developed an interest in more ancient Indian forms of dance, particularly Bharatnyatam and Kathak. She joined the AATMA as a principal dancer in 2010 and has since been promoted to choreographer and dance trainer for the popular troupe. 

Mystic India’s narrator, Sanjay Sahini, is originally from Delhi, India, and received his professional actor’s training at the acclaimed HB Studios in New York City. His breakout role was in the movie Khel Shuru in 2006, and since then he has gone on to perform in numerous films, theatre and off-Broadway productions. One of his most notable performances was in Qurbaani, a short film for which he received a Best Actor Award. He also received numerous awards for his one-man show, in which he performs incredible imitations of Bollywood’s big stars.

Bringing the element of adventure to Mystic India, are the specialty acts, like the ancient sport of Mallakhamb and the aerial arts. The choreographer, trainer and performer in charge of constructing these stunning pieces into the show, is Rajesh Mudki. He hails from Mumbai, India, where he has devoted his life to these spectacular sports. Mudki has trained in Mallakhamb since the age of six, and has since mastered the aerial mediums of silk, hoop, harness and rope. In 2007 he was honoured with the Shiv Chattrapati Award from the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for Best Athlete of the Year. He is the youngest player in history to receive this prestigious award. Mudki has appeared and worked on shows, such as Dance India Dance, Just Dance, DID Little Masters and India’s Got Talent. 

This larger-than-life Bollywood extravaganza is brought to you in association with ZEE TV and will run at the Durban ICC on the 23rd April and at The Teatro Montecasino from the 29th April to 1st May 2016. Blazing Lineup for @RedBullZA Beat Battle of the Year 2015

With less than a month to go, preparations and rehearsals are well under way as the countdown to Red Bull Beat Battle: The Final Move begins. On the 21st of November 2015, eight illustrious dance crews will own the stage at Walter Sisulu Square in Soweto ready, as ever, to showcase some of the finest talent the country has to offer. They’re joined by a throng of hot local music acts, including Stilo Magolide, Kid X, Thebe, Twins on Decks and DJ Speedsta - a lineup sure to make it a night for the books.

The fifth edition of the competition also sees a change in the judging panel as acclaimed dancer, choreographer and actress Lorcia Cooper joins the remarkable trio of Lorna Maseko, Somizi Mhlongo and esteemed South African B-boy Vouks on the judging panel.

Cooper remarked how honored she is to be joining the panel this year: “I have wanted to work on Red Bull Beat Battle since its inception! This kind of competition is really close to my heart because I started my career in a dance crew.”

“I think it’s awesome that Red Bull has given a platform for the recognition of Street Dance and I’m hoping the crews take us on a journey and leave us begging for more,” said Cooper.

As D-day draws near, Vouks Nojokes will spend the next few weeks with the crews in their various hometowns and practice spaces. This is to mentor and provide expert advice to assist crews in perfecting their choreography and honing their timing and execution. The time spent behind the scenes through these mentorship sessions will ultimately psych the crews up and prepare them for the final battle.

Indiblogger DID4 Meet - #DanceItOut for Women Security

It was the time to #DanceItOut as Dance India Dance Season 4 has to start in another three days and the new judges and ZEE TV chose Indibloggers as their partners. I was very excited to meet all the blogger friends after a lot of time and also as it might be my last meet this year as I am travelling to other country for sometime. Just like everytime, the event location was awesome and this time it was The Oberoi, Delhi. With the amazing food, snacks & drinks being served everyone was sure to follow their passion to dance and to blog. Again it finally came down to the moments of truth which again became the meet theme. The social issues we are facing today was the theme to #danceitOut and finally blog it out after the meet. 

The safety of Women- a topic that called for heated discussions and massive protests throughout the country. India has witnessed a huge uproar, a revolution against lecherous members of the society who have caused immense shame to the entire country through their heinous acts.

The question on everyone's lips… the question that has been echoing around the globe, which has been blaring out of televisions and radio stations worldwide – “What is wrong with Indian men”?  Why is it that there are incessant incidences reported almost every day and even after numerous claims and promises by the government, police and judiciary nothing seems to have improved? Infact, the situation has worsened over time. Who is responsible for the safety of women in a country of 1 billion people?

The answer lies within each one of us, the only problem is we do not realize it. It needs a lot of brainstorming to identify that WE are responsible for all that is happening around us. Eve teasing, molestation and rape are the draconian forms of everyday petty incidences at our homes that we ignore. Each time a couple repents the birth of a girl child, however secretly, a shameful sin transpires. Each time a family favors their son over their daughter, the seed of superiority is sown in the mind of the little boy. The family gives fuel to this fire of superiority everyday by showing preferences towards the boy. It can be as trivial as letting him to go out and play while refraining his sister from doing so or dividing the responsibilities of household work among siblings in such a way that the girl gets to be holed up in the kitchen while the boy can go out to the market. As Mahatma Gandhi has said, for the first seven years of their lives, children are like clay. They will mold into respectful, responsible and honest citizens if you teach them to. This is the time children need to be taught equality and respect towards the opposite gender. We have to nip the mere thought of gender inequality in its bud.

The momentum gathered by the fight for a woman’s safety reveals a sad and bitter truth about our society. I believe that this issue cannot be solved superficially by shouting slogans or amending a few laws. After all, it is upto us to either follow the laws effectively or to flaunt them. If every father stops feeling the burden of his daughter’s marriage, if every mother seeks pride in letting her daughter make important decisions of her life herself, I bet the problem is solved there itself.

The situation we face today is not because of a man’s libido. Nor does it depend on the clothes of the girl or how late she chooses to come back home. The problem lies in the eyes of the beholder. The problem is the lack of respect given to women in this patriarchal society, by men and women alike. If every individual recognizes that a girl is not an object, that her place is not reserved in the kitchen, that she is not merely meant to cook and make life easier for her husband, that she is someone who has her own priorities, ambitions and dreams, we will triumph over this problem.

A major lesson that we all need to learn is that the Indian man is not solely responsible. At a time when everyone is ready to jump down the throat of every man they see, we must not forget the brave men who stood up to protect their friends, girlfriends, sisters or even complete strangers. Many men, like Keenan and Reuben have lost their lives fighting to stand up for the equality they believe in. Let us not forget that women are equally responsible. A few days after the Delhi gang rape, a woman sensitization program was being conducted by a senior woman scientist. In front of a large audience comprising of policemen, the public and senior government officials she lambasted the victim .In her opinion the gang rape victim should not have fought back while being raped since that may have ‘saved’ her intestines. She also wondered what she was doing at 9 PM alone with a boy. When powerful women are actively participating in victim blaming, how do we expect to change the mindset of boys who are brought up by these women?

Let us not forget that the responsibility of keeping a woman ‘safe’ is not merely restricted to protecting her from rape. It encompasses protecting her dignity and self esteem even after she has been raped. It means to never, ever blame the victim or make any excuses for the crime. It implies never questioning her intentions of staying out at night or wearing what she wants to. Would we question our sons if they wanted to wear shorts and go out for ice cream at midnight? Protecting her safety signifies protecting her from discrimination at every single step of her life.

Today, when the entire nation is clamoring over the problem, cribbing over the rules, criticizing the judiciary, the police and the government, I appeal to the people of India, dig deep into your family, because you have the capacity to bring about a change in your family and your neighborhood. Feel proud to be the father of a girl, don’t curb her freedom. Instead teach your son to respect his sister. Teach your daughter to be fearless and independent. Teach your children equality. Do not let their genders guide what you teach them. 

Irrespective of their sex, teach your children to cook and to play cricket. Teach them to sew buttons and to plan for their future. If your son is interested in fashion, send him to an art class. If your daughter is an athlete, coach her for the Olympics. While many have labeled this period in India as a fight for woman empowerment, I believe this is a fight for equality.And whatever medium we choose to communicate this feeling we need to stop this degradation of the society. Dance is the best medium to bring out your inner emotions and I feel that I could make a change in the society by changing myself and others with whom I come in contact with. We are all humans and should behave like one.

They are the true carrier of these feelings when they express the same on TV, more and more audience will listen and will take a stand on women security.
