@Acer Unveils Self-driving Concept Car #NextAtAcer #ConceptCar

Hi Friends,

Acer unveiled its self-driving concept car at the Taiwan Automotive Technology Innovation Summit 2018, in collaboration with Yulon Group, one of Taiwan’s top automakers and its subsidiaries automotive electronics provider HAITEC and car brand Luxgen. Integrating Acer’s autonomous driving system with the Luxgen S3 electric vehicle platform, the two companies demonstrated their level 4-ready self-driving concept car, showcasing their shared vision of AI (artificial intelligence) and autonomous driving technology.

“Both the automotive and ICT industries are going through a paradigm shift; automation, connectivity, electrification, and ‘servicification’ are key trends of future development,” said Edward Lin, Associate Vice President, Value Lab, Acer Inc. “In the realm of smart transportation, Acer already has a foothold in electronic ticketing, smart parking, connected car, and traffic prediction, and we’re excited to work with Yulon Group to venture into self-driving cars.”

Lin also added, “With Acer’s strength across software, hardware, and services, we’re in a great position to leverage our AI technology and fulfill the vision of Mobility as a Service (MaaS).”
@Acer Unveils Self-driving Concept Car #NextAtAcer #ConceptCar
“Autonomous driving is the future trend of the automotive industry, manufacturers around the world are stepping up from level 2 autonomous driving to level 3 and 4,” said Jung-Kuei Chen, Vice President, Product Engineering Group II, HAITEC. “With Acer, we’ve jointly unveiled Taiwan’s first self-driving concept car with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), IoV (Internet of Vehicles) and autonomous driving technology. Integrating Acer’s expertise in AI and the cloud with HAITEC’s self-developed open vehicle platform, we’ve achieved so much through our cross-industry collaboration.”

The level 4-ready self-driving concept car is based on the Luxgen S3 electric vehicle platform, with Acer’s autonomous driving system encompassing sensing, decision-making and control. Acer’s self-driving system leverages AI and sensor fusion algorithms fed with data from real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, cameras, Lidars, MMW radars, IMU (inertial measurement unit) and ultrasonic sensors. It also uses deep learning technology to conduct object recognition, and then implements dynamic vehicle control to realize autonomous driving.

Acer’s self-driving system makes dynamic vehicle control decisions through AI models based on key data including image recognition, 3D Lidar obstacle detection, high-precision maps and real-time positioning to help the car steer, brake, cruise, maneuver, or park. It also has a cloud management system for car sharing services so that a control center can dispatch vehicles when users make transportation requests through their mobile device. The cloud management system can manage scheduling, monitoring, notification, and reporting, and allows safety monitoring and human intervention.

In the future, Acer’s self-driving system can enable multiple levels of autonomous driving, with plans to open the platform to partners and developers to collaborate on next-generation self-driving services.

New Ways To Creatively Express Yourself @SpotifySA #Music #SpotifySouthAfrica

Hi Friends,

In 2018, gone are the days of handwritten love letters, sitting hunched over a radio playing a tug of war between ‘record’ and ‘stop’ to create the perfect mixtape, or diligently copying down the lyrics of a favourite song to share with someone special.

While technology may have taken us into a new era there is no reason why we still can’t express our feelings creatively, especially with the rise of music streaming services like Spotify, which have made listening to and sharing music simpler and less time consuming.

While the modern-day mixtape may take on the form of a specially curated playlist - now you can take this a step further by creating a playlist that spells out exactly how you feel or want to say simply using song titles.

Whether you want to ask someone out, apply for a job (this could work as a great covering letter), pop the question, announce there’s a baby on the way, help a friend through a tough time or simply let someone special know you’re thinking of them – the options are endless, and with a catalogue of over 35 million tracks on Spotify there’s a song to spell out any message.
New Ways To Creatively Express Yourself @SpotifySA #Music #SpotifySouthAfrica
To get you started, if you want to tell someone how much you love them, pick a few song titles that spell out how you feel and arrange them in a playlist to form one beautiful sentence.

Have some fun with your love note. Once you have created a new playlist, add a fun description of the compilation by leaving some blanks, in the description, in the form of numbers so that the recipient fills in the missing words using the associated song titles in the playlist, to read out the love note.

For example, spell out the message in the description placeholder using the playlist below:

‘’I really want to share this with 1 (the one I love) as you are the 2 (love of my life) and I know that I was 3 (made for you) because I really 4 (can’t help falling in love), this is just 5 (the way you make me feel) always!’’

1. The One I Love – R.E.M
2. Love Of My Life - Queen
3. Made For You – Banky W
4. Can’t Help Falling In Love – Elvis Presley
5. The Way You Make Me Feel – Michael Jackson

Take it one step further and pop the big question with a creative playlist proposal.

Title your playlist: I have a question for you? And indicate in the descriptor that the song titles spell out a message, then list the tracks in the following order and share the link to the playlist with your significant other. Turn it into a collaborative playlist and eagerly await the answer.

· I Just Called to Say I Love You
· You’re the One that I want
· Spend My Life With You
· I Have a Question
· Marry Me
· What’s your Answer?

For more inspiration visit Spotify Browse/ Romance for a selection of curated playlists that cover timeless love song classics, to wedding to heartbreak playlists, something to span all occasions of the heart. Download the Spotify app via the Android or iOS app store or by heading to www.spotify.com - to embed Spotify into a website - right click on any playlist, go to 'share' and copy embed code.

@TsogoSun Commemorates Decades of #Heritage and #Tourism in #Durban

Hi Friends,

Renowned as one of South Africa’s top tourism destinations, Durban has long delivered excellence for both holiday and business travel, with golden beaches, a year-round warm climate, a wide range of entertainment options and conference facilities, a diverse and vibrant culture, and world-class accommodation. In honour of Tourism month and Heritage Day in September, Tsogo Sun (https://www.tsogosun.com/) is commemorating its growing investment in the city’s tourism offering over the last five decades.
@TsogoSun Commemorates Decades of Heritage and Tourism in #Durban
Tsogo Sun currently boasts seven hotels and two resorts from Umhlanga in the north to uShaka Marine World in the south, as well as the area’s leading entertainment destination, Suncoast (https://www.tsogosun.com/suncoast-casino). The group’s nine properties together offer 1 958 rooms, 13 restaurants, eight bars, and a myriad of other facilities and amenities. For decades, when South Africans think of holidays, Durban is the top of mind city – and Tsogo Sun’s hotels have continued to tick all the boxes for ideal accommodation, the best ocean views, the finest restaurants, and the easiest access to the city’s beautiful beaches.

Tsogo Sun’s Durban heritage began with the opening of the Beverly Hills (https://www.tsogosun.com/beverly-hills) in Umhlanga by Sol Kerzner in 1964. From this, Southern Sun was born in 1969, and in 1971 the group’s first new hotel was built, The Elangeni, on the Durban beachfront, which was followed by the iconic five-star Maharani. In 1981 Umhlanga Sands Hotel was bought and the Southern Sun Timeshare concept was launched, which subsequently included Cabana Beach Resort. Garden Court Marine Parade opened in 1985 with a distinctive art deco feel, and then Garden Court South Beach, previously Malibu Hotel, joined the family. In 2002 the group invested a further R1.4 billion into the Golden Mile – the single largest investment by any private company – with Suncoast Casino, Hotels & Entertainment, adding two hotels (Suncoast Towers and SunSquare Suncoast) and an array of entertainment, retail, gaming, fast-food and restaurant options. The ninth hotel, Garden Court Umhlanga, opened in 2010, and in 2013, Tsogo Sun transformed two of its beachfront hotels into the massive 734-room Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani hotel (https://www.tsogosun.com/southern-sun-elangeni-maharani).
@TsogoSun Commemorates Decades of Heritage and Tourism in #Durban
Ravi Nadasen, COO of Tsogo Sun hotels, says, “Tsogo Sun is proud of our position as a key role player in the Durban economy. Our continued investment into our local properties is a reflection of our strong confidence in the area as an attractive leisure and business tourist destination, and in the eThekwini Municipality’s significant efforts to ensure the beachfront promenade is a world-class attraction for local and international travelers.”

Tsogo Sun’s latest investment in Durban is a complete redevelopment of Suncoast at a cost of R1,6 billion, which will be fully completed by end 2018 and includes an additional 8,000 square metres of space, a newly located Salon Privé with sea views, eight new restaurants, retail outlets, casino space, parking, a Barnyard Theatre, and a multi-purpose event venue for up to 2,000 people.

The eThekwini Municipality is also continuing its city improvement projects, which include the Point Waterfront Promenade Extension scheduled for completion in 2019, and a new KwaZulu Cruise Terminal to be constructed in the Port of Durban by end 2020. Apart from its extensive tourism offerings, Durban is South Africa’s third largest city, built around one of the busiest ports in Africa and has the fourth largest harbour in the southern hemisphere, and has earned its reputation as a dynamic mecca of business and industry.
@TsogoSun Commemorates Decades of Heritage and Tourism in #Durban
Nadasen adds that the group has recognized the city’s vast potential for growth and is committed to helping the city ensure it achieves its full potential as the best event city in South Africa, offering a rich playground of activities, hospitality, and events. “Our investment in Durban is directly in line with Tsogo Sun’s vision to provide the greatest possible variety of quality hospitality, leisure, gaming, and entertainment experiences at every one of our destinations.”

Philip Sithole, Deputy City Manager Development & Planning says, Tsogo Sun has contributed to changing the Durban skyline through their investment in key strategic tourism products which are key in ensuring that our tourism thrives. “Over the years the economy of Durban has benefited enormously from this partnership as it continues to shape the landscape of the city’s offering whilst complementing our vision of making Durban the must-visit destination.”

Tsogo Sun has a portfolio of over 100 hotels and 13 casino and entertainment destinations throughout South Africa, Africa, and Seychelles. For more details, visit https://www.tsogosun.com, follow on Twitter @TsogoSun or like on Facebook.com/TsogoSun.

75% More Speed and 58% More Efficiency in @HuaweiZA #HuaweiMate20 Series #Smartphone

Hi Friends,

Huawei’s Kirin 980 boasts the world’s first 7-nanometer mobile AI chipset that promises a higher intelligence in mobile phones.

In the race against time to provide consumers with what they want and when they want it, phone companies pack more power, more speed and more efficiency into each new chipset design. Huawei’s 7-nanometer chipset is expected to bring the next level of true AI in Huawei’s upcoming flagship phone to be launched next month.

Huawei has always been at the forefront of research and innovation in mobile AI and is one of the top leading companies in terms of R&D. The company has 14 R&D centres globally, with 45% of its total workforce engaged in R&D. According to the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard (2017), Huawei's R&D investment ranked number six ahead of Apple at number seven.

Last year, the company was the first to launch an AI-enabled mobile phone with the launch of the mate 10 series, this year Huawei is giving a hint on what to expect in its upcoming mate 20 series that will be powered by its newest chipset the Kirin 980 which is another breakthrough innovation. Compared to its predecessor the chipset will deliver robust performance increase in Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 device, a series known throughout the industry for their performance. The power-packed 7 nanometer 1cm2 die size processor, equipped with all-new CPU, GPU and world’s first 7-nanometer mobile AI chipset, is the ultimate engine to power next-generation productivity, efficiency entertainment applications and also a second to none gaming experience.

75% More Speed and 58% More Efficiency in @HuaweiZA #HuaweiMate20 Series #Smartphone

More efficiency, more power
With the capacity to deliver 75% improved performance and 58% improved power efficiency in the devices that it powers, the cutting edge 7nm processor does this by packing 6.9 billion transistors - 1.6 times more than the previous generation. Running at a high clock speed, Kirin 980 enables quicker app launch times, better multi-tasking and a generally smoother user experience. The Kirin 980’s unique configuration of cores are flexibly allocated to tasks depending on the device requirements at that point in time.

The next level of gaming
As graphics in mobile games have become more and more sophisticated in recent years, the Mali-G76 GPU that debuts in the Kirin 980 delivers unparalleled gaming experiences, with 46 % greater graphics processing power at 178% improved power efficiency over the previous generation. It also features an innovative clock boosting technology that utilizes AI to intelligently identify gaming workloads and adjust resource allocation for optimal gaming performance.

Camera Capabilities
Huawei is now synonym of the ultimate smartphone photography and its newly launched chipset will further enhance the camera capabilities in the upcoming mate 20 series. The flagship will boast Huawei’s proprietary fourth-generation ISP that provides better support for multi-camera configurations, as well as an all-new HDR color reproduction technology that can manipulate picture contrast to highlight objects on various parts of an image. In addition, the Kirin 980’s noise reduction solution results in better quality on images taken in low-light and improved motion tracking that recognizes a moving subject with 97.4% accuracy, so users can capture fleeting moments with ease.
The rise of video-centric social media platforms brought together with it a surge of demand for video features. Kirin 980 adopts a new pipeline dedicated to processing video captures, allowing the camera module to shoot videos with 33% shorter delay.

World-Class Connectivity
To deliver the best connectivity to phones powered by Kirin 980, Huawei integrated the world’s first modem supporting LTE Cat.21 with a peak download speed of 1.4Gbps. Additionally, with carrier aggregation across frequency bands, users will be free to choose their mobile operators and still enjoy the same premium connectivity experience, wherever they are.

A Higher Intelligence
Following the successful Mate 10 launch last year which featured the first camera with built-in AI, the Kirin 980 promises an elevated on-device AI experience with better object recognition, real-time video processing, and precise real-time object segmentation due to the world’s first 7-nanometer mobile AI chipset that results in an image recognition capability of up to 4,500 images per minute, further demonstrating Huawei’s industry leadership in the On-Device AI space.

The Mate series is one of Huawei’s two flagship lines of mobile phones that have consistently delivered true innovation and breakthrough technology like no other. Huawei’s Mate Series has always brought best-in-class performance and innovation to the mobile phone market, focusing on new chipset technology, processing power and battery performance, so we can’t wait what extraordinary features the upcoming mate 20 series will boast.

A higher intelligence is around the corner. Stay tuned for the launch of the first Kirin 980-powered Mate 20 series, which is scheduled to arrive on October 16th where it will be launched globally, followed by a regional launch for the MEA region that will take place in Dubai on October 24th.

*The specifications of Kirin 980 do not represent the specifications of the phone using this chip.

The TV That Goes Where You Go @SamsungSA #QLEDtv

Hi Friends,

TV has seamlessly joined the free-range trend, courtesy of Samsung. Now, it’s more than just what you’re watching. It’s about where you want to watch it. While the location of the TV was always a carefully considered decision, it doesn’t have to be any more. The lounge may have just lost its tight grip on the device that its entire décor was based around.

Samsung’s 2018 QLED TV has already changed the television landscape completely. The new, award-winning device offers an unprecedented viewing experience that delivers complete immersion. And one of its less discussed features could become of your most used. The TV comes with an innovative optical cable, which connects all devices without any messy tangled wires and the really incredible part is that it includes your power cable. The additional benefit is clear – you can get up to 20m* of slim, sleek, almost invisible cabling. Essentially, the TV goes where you go.

Reginald Nxumalo, Director: Consumer Electronics, Samsung South Africa, “The invisible cabling ensures your TV connections aren’t intrusive on your interior style. In addition, the integrated power and data supply in one cable is revolutionary. The extra length lets you have a lot of fun with putting the TV in places that are unique to your particular lifestyle.”
The TV That Goes Where You Go @SamsungSA #QLEDtv
What goes better with a braai than the big game? As its unlikely you’ll be braaiing near your lounge, why not move the stadium to your entertainment area? Watching the meat sizzle and the match heat up is now one seamless event.

A kiddie party and clean couches is hardly a match made in heaven. If the little ones need their fix of that show they’ve already watched 50 times over, why not take the TV to an area of the house that can handle the noise, mess and tantrums.

Spring has arrived, but so has your hay fever. Or maybe there is another reason you want to just kick back and relax in the comfort of your bedroom. No problem. If your room is within the amazing 20 m radius you’ve got a home theatre experience from the comfort of your favourite pillow.

TV isn’t just a TV anymore. It’s a hub for entertainment, gaming and event conferencing. The ground-breaking invisible cable adds a whole new dimension to the reason you’ve switched it on. So, how will you use your ‘free-range’ TV?

“Innovation at Samsung is focused on how technology can improve and make lives easier, creating comfort and beauty,” concludes Nxumalo.

*The QLED includes 5m of cabling. There is the option to purchase an additional 15m to extend the reach to 20m.

A Day In The Life Of A TV @SamsungSA #QLEDtv

Hi Friends,

It’s a good thing TV’s can’t experience self-esteem issues. They are stared at intently by multiple eyes, day in, day out. Despite the exponential growth of the internet worldwide, South Africans are still avid TV viewers. The fact that you can connect to the web through it anyway, has kept the love affair alive and well. A TV is undeniably a cherished part of most people’s daily lives.

Reginald Nxumalo, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa, said: “Although streaming has changed the way people consume their television content, it hasn’t changed the fact that it’s one of the best ways to wind down, be entertained and spend time together as a family. Of course, we know a thing or two about watching television and our ranges, including QLED and The Frame, are geared towards ensuring an exceptionally immersive and quality experience.”

Sometimes, even before the sun has woken up, the TV is turned on. If it’s a weekend, it’s likely the little ones have crept out of bed and into the TV room, to watch a programme they’ve already watched 20 times before. Later on, an unsuspecting adult will join them to watch it yet again. During the week, it’s generally – a parent hastily flicking the power on to check what the world and weather has in store for them. A typical scenario – at 6am, a parent gets up to start making breakfast and school lunches. In the kitchen, there’s a smaller TV, which is turned on and tuned into one of the early morning breakfast shows so they can catch up on interesting news and titbits for the day, or even a cooking show for inspiration for the evening meal. Another parent quickly switches on the bedroom TV to get a quick update of news, weather, finance or sports while getting ready for a day at work. Once the children start to gather in the kitchen or dining room for a rushed breakfast, depending on their ages, the TV will be re-tuned to kids programming or the latest music show. All that happens before everyone leaves for school and work in the morning.
A Day In The Life Of A TV @SamsungSA #QLEDtv
“Samsung TVs are built to last and viewing habits are taken into account during the development phase of every model we produce. It’s not only how users watch that we look at, it’s also about their lifestyles and what type of spaces they want to create in their homes,” adds Nxumalo.

If there’s a grandparent staying at home, then the TV probably won’t be switched off. Rather the channels will be on constant flip, until something suitably distracting and entertaining can be found. The next shift is almost always taken up by kids returning from school.

“For families who want to spend dinner time together without the TV on, the QLED range is a great option as it blends seamlessly into the background mimicking the wall behind it. A QLED TV also comes with an innovative optical cable, which connects all devices without any messy tangled wires and includes the power cable. The additional benefit is clear – you get 5m of slim, sleek, almost invisible cabling*. This gives a family the option of a TV that can move around the home effortlessly,” concludes Nxumalo.

Once dinner is over, watching a programme together as a family is a great space to encourage cuddles and bonding. It’s a sense of shared experience that can form part of later conversations. When children are in bed and the day is over, the TV often remains on for catching up on series or the day’s news.

TV’s are like campfires. They bring people together to hear stories that enthral for hours. And the memories live on, long after it’s switched off.

* The TV includes a 5m cable. However, an additional 15m cable can be purchased to increase mobility even further.

Why Air Conditioners Are A Dream Investment @SamsungSA #AirConditioners

Hi Friends,

With the warm African sun smiling down on us, summer in South Africa is glorious. It’s that wonderful time that sends us rushing happily to beaches, pools and sunny picnic spots. The heat at night, however, can be decidedly uncomfortable, unless you have a good air conditioner. But is the aircon good for you?

Choose The Right Temperature
Air conditioners serve a greater purpose than helping you beat a stuffy, summer’s night. It’s all about body temperature regulation. The magic temperature range for a good sleep is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. While 15 degrees may feel too cold for some and 20 degrees too hot for others, once you find your sweet spot you’ll be in dreamland in no time. The science behind it is simple. This temperature range assists the body to reach the cooler temperatures that induce deep sleep. Therefore, an aircon is a good example of human-friendly technology.

“Technology is here to make life better. And a good night’s sleep has many essential benefits that impact your whole day. At Samsung, we conduct exhaustive research to produce pioneering technologies aimed at encouraging healthy sleeping patterns,” says Robert Larkan, Head of Digital Air Solutions at Samsung South Africa.
Why Air Conditioners Are A Dream Investment @SamsungSA #AirConditioners
Make Sleep A Priority
Constantly waking up in middle of the night to adjust a duvet or turn over to the ‘cooler’ side of the pillow is frustrating. And after just a few nights of tossing turning in bed we begin to suffer the effects of sleep deprivation. We often don’t notice the impact on our mental abilities and ultimately put our health at risk. Poor sleep is also linked to weight gain and weakened immune systems. If you don’t snooze, you lose.

Go With The Flow

It is also important that you factor in the quality of your air conditioning. Your aircon must be properly maintained and operate with clean filters to ensure a healthy sleeping environment. Another factor is the consistency of the airflow. An aircon that constantly blasts cool air at you can have negative consequences. Samsung’s Wind-Free™ technology is an example of good airflow control. After you’ve selected the desired temperature with Fast Cooling mode, it maintains the ideal temperature without any direct wind by gently dispersing cool and still air through micro air holes for a natural cooling effect. This also negates the stuffiness people feel in artificially regulated temperatures.
Why Air Conditioners Are A Dream Investment @SamsungSA #AirConditioners
Sleep Yourself Younger
There are many benefits to sleeping in cool temperatures. *Temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees encourage your body to release melatonin, a hormone that challenges the symptoms of ageing by holding wrinkles and age spots at bay. When you keep cool, you release more of this remarkable hormone. Your more youthful self also benefits from the peaceful sleep with a sharper attention span the following day.

Clearly, looking and feeling healthier is affected by the quality your sleep. And if an air conditioner can help you get a good night’s rest, then it’s a dream investment.

#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo

Hi Friends,

rAge 2018 saw 34,002 people pass through the doors of the Ticketpro Dome to witness an unrivaled spectacle of exquisite cosplay, fantastic games, and only the freshest geek culture memorabilia. Most importantly, rAge 2018 was the testament to the fact that gaming, cosplay, and tech are at the heart of a well-loved and ever-growing culture in South Africa.

That culture is also renowned for chewing through tremendous amounts of bandwidth! MWeb provided an 8Gbps line to the expo and recorded a whopping 120TB in downloads and 15Tb in uploads – an absolutely astounding amount of data.

A quick look at the statistics for this year’s expo tells a story about this passionate, enthusiastic community. Anyone who took the time to head on over to rAge would’ve quickly found themselves immersed in nothing but warmth and dedication – not to mention the incredible tech and gaming merch on display.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
“The floor plan was dramatically changed to allow for more breathing room. The LAN was repositioned, and by all accounts, this went down well with our dedicated gamers and fans. We hosted a few large-scale casual esports tournaments that saw permanent queues the entire weekend, as well as some very happy winners,” commented Michael James, Senior Project Manager, and owner of rAge.

“While figures were down slightly, this is something we anticipated as a result of new market entries such as Comic-Con playing in the same space so close to our dates. Everything considered though, the impact on rAge was negligible,” concludes James.

rAge is a place where people can come together and celebrate their mutual love of virtual adventure and outlandish fantasy, of worlds beyond our own that we’d otherwise never get the chance to experience. This is a community that celebrates its geekiness, and rAge is proud to provide a place for everyone to share in the revelry.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
A prime example would be the scenario that unfolded at the Cosplay Skit Show, when Maoukami Cosplay proposed – on stage – to Chiaki Riku, to raucous cheers from the crowd!

More than 500 accredited media personnel attended the expo this year, acknowledging the fact that interest in this sphere is growing exponentially. There were more than 30 new and pre-released games on the show between the numerous stands, as well as a veritable menagerie of gaming mementos that made for a collector’s utopia.

Many retailers reported selling out of stock on the first day and having to restock for the rest of the weekend. And that’s despite the fact that we’re technically in a recession.

The PlayStation stand was a roaring success – which is no surprise when you consider all the FIFA 19 action they had to offer. Over 1,200 players registered to compete in The PlayStation Cup visitor’s competition, and the winners walked away with some amazing rewards. PlayStation really took things to new heights with their stand for Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was designed to resemble a miniature version of New York’s iconic skyline.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
Xbox brought their A-game, with an astounding 98 Xboxes on their stand for visitors to play on, showing off titles like the brand-new Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Forza Horizon 4, alongside many others. Assassin’s Creed, in particular, proved immensely popular with visitors. Xbox’s Fortnite Festival saw an overwhelming 1,845 visitors competing over the course of three days, once again proving the game’s seemingly endless allure.

Another highlight for the weekend was the home-coded stand, where local developers showcased their games to the public, some for the very first time. South African developer Robot Wizard’s Boet Fighter, was shown off to many eager boitjies and binnets at its demo launch. The game is a tongue-in-cheek reflection of the urban nightlife of Jo’burg, and in the words of the developers, gamers came to “klap those buttons like an MMA boet attacking a bus”. It’s a fantastic confirmation of South Africa’s ability to develop software that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international titles.

Twitter blew up throughout rAge, with #rAgeexpo2018 trending for the entire weekend. Facebook and Instagram were also inundated with interest in the expo, garnering thousands of posts between them – including a stunning array of some of the finest cosplay this side of the Atlantic. The Table Realms app (a locally-developed platform via which you can play games on any device) trended at number 1 on the Google Play store over the weekend thanks to its presence at rAge.

Now let’s talk hauls. Attendees walked away with enough loot to put Blackbeard to shame. Hundreds of thousands of rands worth of prizes were given away. Memorabilia, mementos, cards, caps, figurines, tech, and a whole bunch more traded hands, ensuring most expo-goers left the show with heavy bags of free stuff.

rAge 2018 was something special. It once again offered a welcoming space for South Africa’s community of geeks to share their appetite for their favorite characters, games, rigs, software, hardware and meticulously-made costumes (which sometimes looked better than the originals). But just as importantly, rAge 2018’s numbers prove that this is an expanding arena in our country.

Stay tuned for rAge 2019, which is happening from 27 to 29 September 2019.

Cheers!!!

Cosplayers Raise Breast Cancer Awareness @rAgeExpo #rAgeExpo2018

Hi Friends,

The first of October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a critical time in the fight for education around a disease which statistically affects one in every 26 women in South Africa.

This month, we also see the rAge expo returning - bigger, brighter, and now “pinker” than ever before! The expo takes place from 5 to 7 October at the Ticketpro Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg.

For the duration of the expo, a competition will be running to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), which gives entrants the chance to win some geeky prizes.
Cosplayers Raise Breast Cancer Awareness @rAgeExpo #rAgeExpo2018
Overwatch Pink Mercy
As South Africa’s largest annual video gaming, computer, technology, and geek culture exhibition, rAge is the perfect platform for a group of Overwatch cosplayers to raise awareness for breast cancer. Much like the character of Mercy, a doctor named Angela Ziegler, these cosplayers are looking to strike the perfect balance between the power of healing and the joy of dressing up. You can expect to see some of your favourite Overwatch heroes such as Mercy, McCree and D.Va brought to life with a little bit of a pink twist!

These cosplayers aren’t simply going to be throwing out random facts at perfect strangers though. They’ll be looking for donations and rewarding donors with pink ribbons, made from donated scrap materials.

“A simple donation will see the entrant go into a draw for a whole host of special goodies, including NAG hampers, a hand-painted Spider-Gwen figurine, a 3D-printed Pink Mercy prop gun replica, Funko Pop figures, and my personal favourite… A set of custom-made wings chosen by the winner,” explains the organiser of the contest, Bronwyn Scott.

“I was blown away by the amount of support that this initiative has received from an organisation, sponsor and volunteer point of view. Everyone wants to do something small to help out, and in doing so we have the opportunity to make a big impact,” she says.

The competition will run for the duration of the month, closing on 26 October. The draw will take place on 31 October. Flyers will be given out at the event, so get down to the Ticketpro Dome for rAge this coming weekend and pledge your support by donating to an extremely important cause.

“Healing stream engaged.”
Dates: 5 October – 7 October 2018
Expo times: Friday: 10:00-18:00 | Saturday: 09:00-18:00 | Sunday: 09:00-16:00

A Memoir - This Month Last Year - Aug 2017 www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay

Hi Friends, It's been some days I have not written on my blog and it was like some long week of holidays where everything was put ...
