#SouthAfrica Sixth IMAX @SterKinekor Opens up with #TheForceAwakensSA

Hi Guys,

Following the ongoing success of The IMAX Experience® at five popular Ster-Kinekor sites – Gateway in Durban, The Grove Mall in Pretoria, Cape Gate in Cape Town, Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth and Cradlestone Mall in Krugersdorp – the country’s leading cinema chain officially launched its sixth IMAX® theatre on 15 December.

Star Wars super-fan on the black carpet

Joburg movie audiences can now enjoy the world’s most immersive cinematic experience in the 375-seat IMAX® theatre, which forms part of the new Ster-Kinekor state-of-the-art, ten cinema complex on the rooftop of Eastgate Shopping Centre. Built as a bespoke IMAX theatre, this cinema boasts the biggest screen of all six IMAX theatres across South Africa.

The IMAX theatre played host to the Official South African Special Event Screening of the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens: An IMAX 3D Experience. The more than 300 attendees – VIP guests, celebrities, media and Star Wars ‘super fans’ (suitably dressed for the occasion) – settled into the brand new IMAX seats and marveled at the impressive, ceiling to floor and wall to wall screen. Following speeches by the film’s distributor, The Walt Disney Company Africa, Ster-Kinekor and IMAX Corporation representatives, the audience was treated to a movie experience of inter-galactic proportions, as the audience travelled back to a galaxy far, far away…

Wanda Matandela CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres & Giovanna Dolci VP Theatre Dev EMEA of IMAX Corp

”At the end of business on Tuesday (15 December), pre-ticket sales for the film across all Ster-Kinekor cinema experiences – IMAX, Cine Prestige 3D and Ster-Kinekor 3D and 2D cinemas – had amassed to 63 200. This figure makes Star Wars: The Force Awakens the film with the second most advance bookings for Ster-Kinekor in recorded history,” says Wanda Matandela, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Fans of The IMAX Experience® at Ster-Kinekor Eastgate are in for a treat over the next few months with the release of a variety of movies for the whole family to enjoy: The Finest Hour; Deadpool; Divergent Series: Allegiant Part 1; Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Jungle Book.

@SterKinekor opens #IMAXGauteng Cradlestone Mall #Johannesburg

Hi Guys,

The normal cinema has been transformed to offer the most immersive cinematic experience as The IMAX Experience® returned to Johannesburg on 2nd July 2015.  Ster-Kinekor officially opened the doors of its fifth IMAX theatre in South Africa, and the first for the Johannesburg area, at its cinema complex at Cradlestone Mall, west of the city.

Exuberant 947 radio personality Anele Mdoda, the MC for the launch evening, welcomed the guests and got proceedings underway. Following speeches by John Sikiotis, Managing Executive of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, and IMAX spokesperson, Giovanni Dolci, VP Theatre Development: EMEA at IMAX Corporation, invited guests were treated to one of the first local screenings of the much-anticipated, sci-fi adventure, Terminator: Genisys in IMAX® 3D. Arnie is definitely back in the circuit!

The opening of this IMAX theater follows the success of The IMAX Experience® at four other Ster-Kinekor sites that have opened during the past year and a half. These include Gateway in Durban, The Grove Mall in Pretoria, Cape Gate in Cape Town, and Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth that opened in mid-June, as the country’s leading cinema chain continues to bring ‘Great Moments at their Greatest’ to its audiences.

One of the cinemas at Cradlestone Mall has been transformed to accommodate the impressive floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall IMAX screen and superior acoustical treatment. The design of the auditorium and the seating layout ensures a thrilling IMAX experience at every screening, while the cutting-edge, dual-projection system delivers crystal-clear images. Coupled with its customized theater design and powerful digital sound system, IMAX creates a unique cinema environment that makes audiences feel as if they are in the film.

Fans of IMAX who are based in Johannesburg will be pleased to know that the next IMAX build will also be on their doorstep. Ster-Kinekor and IMAX have confirmed that the sixth theatre will be installed at the completely revamped Ster-Kinekor site at Eastgate shopping mall, which is scheduled to open towards the end of October this year. This latest deal brings Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX commitment to six theatres in under two years.

Since Friday, 03 July, the new IMAX theatre at Cradlestone Mall viewers have started enjoying the screenings of Terminator: Genisys in IMAX 3D. Follow @sterkinekor using the hashtag, #IMAXGAUTENG. With blockbuster titles such as Marvel’s Ant-Man (31 July), Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (07 August) and Everest (18 September) scheduled for IMAX® release in the next few months, IMAX and SterKinekor are looking forward to giving their audiences even ‘greater moments’ on the big IMAX screen.
