The Ultimate Braai Master - Season 5 is No 1 Cooking Show in #SouthAfrica @UltimateBraai @etv

Hi Guys,

It was announced that UBM is the Number 1 cooking show in South Africa based on independent measurement figures and in fact far exceeds the viewership figures of any food show currently on TV.

The Ultimate Braai Master which has swept away “the Best Reality TV” award for the last 4 years in a row was nominated again at this year’s SAFTA Awards which is yet another accolade to the countless awards won by South African, Branded Entertainment Company, Cooked in Africa Films.

Says Executive Producer Peter Gird: “ Its always such a pleasure to be recognised for doing great work which would not be possible without the army of support that we receive from so many people. In particular our sponsors who have been so supportive and of course the 65 crew members who give up two months of the year to travel some 9000km around this beautiful country. Not forgetting that a TV show like this would be nothing without amazing contestants, who put their lives on hold for the love of the “braai”."

The Ultimate Braai Master, currently showing on e.tv on Sundays at 4pm, is about to launch its 6th Season due to high demand. The show reaches on average 1. 5 Million people per week but more significantly it gets broadcast to over 100 Million homes around the world.

Says Gird: “Its a humbling experience to get fan mail and requests for more seasons, from countries like Poland, Sweden and Brazil, apart from all our fans right across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and throughout Africa. The show is also gaining traction in North, South and Latin America.”

Hosted by co- creator and famous bush cook Justin Bonello and introducing new judges Pete Goffe-Wood and Benny Masekwameng, who are no strangers to our television screens, the trio have many exciting additions and twists to the game in the forthcoming season which will test the contestants to the limit.

A significant and very exciting development is that the format rights for the Ultimate Braai Master have been acquired by world renowned distributer TVF in London, who believe that the show deserves its rightful place on the world stage. With UBM’s first international format deal about to be concluded in Brazil,it will make it the first homegrown show, created and produced in South Africa, to have travelled outside of the country and onto global markets.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for our company and we are very proud of this show because it is made with love, passion and a whole lot of gees!” Says Gird.

Season 4 @UltimateBraai #Winners - John Grundlingh and Piet Marais

Hi Guys,

Last night the winners of Ultimate Braai Master Season 4, Game On were announced in what proved to be a truly epic season finale. After 60 days and 7000 kilometres on the road, it’s hard to imagine that the journey —which took us to some of the country’s most beautiful and remote locations— is finally over. No doubt South Africans everywhere will be wondering what they’ll do to fill the void.

Billed as the most combustible season yet, 13 teams faced a range of exceptionally tough challenges from host Justin Bonello and equally rigorous judging courtesy of Executive Chef Bertus Basson and Chef Petrus Madutlela, neither of whom did much to pull their punches.

Winning pair John Grundlingh and Piet Marais weren’t daunted however, choosing instead to focus their efforts on what they do best: make really good food on the braai. Ultimately it was this combination of exceptional braai skills and strength of character that landed them on the winner’s podium.
Piet, an entrepreneur from Gordons Bay, originally tried his luck in Season 3, but got sent home early in the game. Determined to prove he has what it takes to nab the title, he returned with John Grundlingh, also a previous contestant on the show, to flex his braai muscles in Season 4. Their motto “When at first you don’t succeed, braai, braai again!” clearly stood the duo in good stead.

“It was quite a privilege for us to be part of two seasons and a complete fairy tale ending to win Season 4. It’s a truly unique experience to travel your own country with an amazing group of people, seeing places you would never normally see and taking part in some seriously tough challenges on the way. I wish we could do it again next year.” commented Piet when asked what the experience was like for him.

John concurs, “Amazeballs does’t come close to describing what it’s like to travel to the best locations in South Africa and then still braai at each of them. It takes your breath away when you realise how many beautiful gems we have hidden in each province. Best of all, I got to do this twice in a row.”

John plans on using his winnings to renovate the kitchen in his new house and was quick to add that this would include an impressive 5-station braai, while Piet’s money will be going straight into his company, Santa Anna’s, which specialises in Mexican products and American style barbecue.

The Suzuki Sx4 was a clear winner with both. Says John, “We took the Suzuki all over South Africa’s toughest terrains and she performed perfectly in all conditions.” Piet agrees,”John and I put it through its paces on the show and we plan on doing the same for this coming year. There’s nothing like a Sho’t Left in a Suzuki Sx4.”

Produced by Cooked in Africa Films, the fourth Season of South Africa’s most-watched cooking show saw audience numbers treble this year, with Ultimate Braai Master now reaching 1.7 million viewers each week. With numbers like these sponsors, Robertsons Herbs & Spices, Coca-Cola, Suzuki and South African Tourism, are sure to have their pens poised in anticipation of Season 5.
