rAge 2024: A GALAXY OF GAMING FASHION AND ART AWAITS

Hi Friends,

The really Awesome Gaming Expo (rAge) - South Africa’s premier gaming and pop culture expo, is coming to the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec from November 29th to December 1st.

With its multiverse of gaming culture, rAge 2024 is not just about games and high tech—it’s about celebrating creativity in all forms, from fashion to bespoke handcrafted items. Visitors can spend the entire weekend exploring the planet of rAge, stocking up on one-of-a-kind festive season gifts, and immersing themselves in an unforgettable experience.
rAge 2024: A GALAXY OF GAMING FASHION AND ART AWAITS
rAge Expo 2023 - Original Art at The Artist Alley
The Artists Alley
Artists Alley is set to be a major highlight of this year’s event. Whether looking for unique keepsakes, handcrafted cosplay accessories, or bespoke gifts, the Alley has it. Nadja Späth, Director of Legion Events SA and curator of Artists Alley, explains what makes this year special.

“We’ve rigorously vetted all vendors and artists to ensure that every item on sale is unique, tailored and handcrafted. There’s no room for mass-produced items here—everything you’ll find in the Alley has been made with passion and creativity.

“The Alley will feature more than 48 stands, expanding beyond last year’s success. Attendees can expect an eclectic array of items, from plushies and crocheted treasures to handmade tabletop role-playing accessories – such as resin cast dice and accessories like wooden dice towers and DM screens, sculptures, cosplay accessories, and custom jewellery. It’s the perfect place to find quirky, creative gifts that you won’t find in any retail store. Plus, on Black Friday (November 29th), Artists Alley will be offering exclusive specials—so be sure to grab those deals!”

In addition to shopping, the Alley will also feature a dedicated art area where visitors can purchase original artwork from local artists. With the rise of AI-generated art, the Artists Alley is doubling down on supporting human creativity. Artists will also offer merchandise like stickers, T-shirts, and mugs, and even take commissions for custom pieces. It’s a celebration of true craftsmanship.

For those looking for something fun and different, this area will also feature temporary airbrushed tattoos.

Nibble Gaming Fashion Show 2023 - model wearing top from Otaku Clothing and cap from Ivyson Army

A Gaming Fashion Show
Nibble Esports, is bringing something exciting to rAge expo with a gaming fashion show that merges cosplay, fandom merchandise, and street fashion into a dazzling display of style and creativity.

“This year’s fashion show is all about celebrating how gaming culture influences fashion in the real world,” says Ruth Bleeker, Managing Director at Nibble. “We’re showcasing everything from full cosplay outfits to more casual gaming-inspired streetwear, focusing on how fandom, identity, and style intersect.

“In addition, we’ll have SPOT (sophisticated agile mobile robot) from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) at the expo as well as participation from their dynamic Fashion Department – which is really exciting!”

Ruth explains that gaming fashion is more than just cosplay competitions—it’s about personal expression and identity. “Gamers are more than just players. They have interests in music, fashion, sports, and more. Through this show, we’re bringing that sense of identity and style to the forefront.”
rAge 2024: A GALAXY OF GAMING FASHION AND ART AWAITS

The fashion show will not feature professional models. Instead, members of the gaming community will take centre stage, highlighting how fandom culture is accessible to everyone.

“At the end of the day, fashion is about community. We want to keep it community-centric, showcasing real gamers and cosplayers who represent what the gaming world is all about.”

This year’s theme is influenced by techwear, urban casual, and Afrofuturism. Expect to see a blend of streetwear fashion, with looks that are big on TikTok and Instagram, and rapidly making their way into South African culture.

And here’s the best part: many of the items showcased during the fashion show will be available at rAge! “We want people to be able to walk away from the show not just with inspiration but with the actual looks and accessories they loved!”

Whether you’re a gamer, fashionista, or someone who loves handcrafted art and unique gifts, rAge expo has something for everyone. Dive into gaming culture, explore innovative tech, celebrate creativity, and stock up on gifts for the festive season—all in one place!

3 Million Pageviews on www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay

Hi Friends,

3 Million Pageviews
8.5 Years of Blogging
300+ Brands and Companies
770 Posts Self-written content
The Life's Way started on 27-December-2012
1 Million achieved on 21-July-2016
2 Million achieved on 8-August-2018
3 Million achieved on 16-May-2021
2281 Total Blog posts on Lifestyle and Technology

It all started with a dream to take care of my free time and to get involved in some kind of creative pursuit so that I can find my mojo and also get into something which can take me places around the city as well as the world. I have been able to enjoy my life in the truest sense of The Life's Way and also thankful to all the brands, companies, PR agencies, People involved in all these creative industries to give me a chance to perform and be myself and promote their products from time to time. I am sure some of them I have failed, some of them are indifferent and some of them must be happy too. Over the years, I have met some people who were really happy to meet me in person and it used to astonish me as to what special I have done in their lives. I also got the opportunity to eat in certain restaurants where I would not have normally gone and also maybe won't be able to afford a meal or two but because of TheLife'sWay I was invited and enjoyed some vegetarian delicacies. I might have not drunk alcohol but if it was gifted to me some of my friends must be happy for that day when he drank that wine or champagne or whiskey.
3 Million Pageviews on www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay
The power of social media platform I understood in my first year of participating in the Facebook contests and then migrating to the Twitter contests soon thereafter. With a strong presence in both these platforms, I was set to achieve something big when I started my blog inspired by the journey my friends took in their collaboration with the Indiblogger platform. I wanted to win some Soul by Ludacris headphones and that was the whole purpose of starting in the blogging industry but I could not win them since today. Though I got to win a lot of prizes on the Indbiblogger platform from earphones to headphones to laptops to cash to gift vouchers and build up my creative instincts as well as knowhows of blogging and in the process meet the biggest celebrities and eat at the 5-star restaurants in India.

When I came here just before the first anniversary of TheLife'sWay, I came upon a different kind of struggle. The internet data was too expensive and I had no social media following locally as I created another Twitter handle @thelifesway to be using especially in South Africa only. I didn't know any PR companies and any brand and even when contacting those brands they were saying you only have 62 followers. Then slowly and steadily I built up my following and after more than 6 months (Nov-2013 to Apr-2014) of struggle, I got my first chance from Sony South Africa who was instrumental in putting me with Primedia to review each and every movie released in their theatres. Throughout my next many years, I continued to watch each and every movie twice a week non-stop unless it's some kind of load-shedding happening in the area.
3 Million Pageviews on www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay
The second thing that happened around the same time was the Mission Samsung's Blogger Challenge Campaign for all the residents of South Africa and it was my dream to be winning one or at least be a part of the challenge. It came in newspapers and on Twitter handles and on their website - I read through the Terms and conditions as I wanted to win the same and put in a lot of effort to get to know about the challenge. It was their collaboration with Webfluential as well as SA Bloggers by Sandy. This contest really gave me a boost as it became my passion because I had missed the opportunity to become Samsung Blogger in India as I started my channel a little late and the contest was over by then where they chose certain bloggers who will get their products and will be getting invited to all their launch events. It was a really big dream for me to get involved with all the technology brands.

I don't remember now when 1 Million and 2 Million pageviews were achieved but I will dig deeper maybe to check on the same. So after a lot of digging, I got the answer to the 2nd Million was done on 8 Aug 2018 after 5.5 years of blogging so it took me around 3 years to reach the 3 million mark. That's a lot of effort guys. The first million I was subscribed to a service where I paid the money annually to do the tweets which used to bring me a lot of traffic on the website and I used the service for 2 years. But I had to disconnect as many of the users blocked me as it was never-ending tweets about the same content again and again. The first million was achieved on 21 July 2016 as I used to tweet the daily progress of my blog those days. Such a time waste if I think about it. I think when I stopped posting that number for many years, people who used to follow me kept asking me how's your blog doing? I never understood the reason for their ask but now I am getting it as to why they used to ask me this question.

So the fastest growth seems to be between the first and the second million pageviews as after the same, I started rejecting many brands who were just making use of my time and efforts and not giving anything in return at all. I have considerably reduced my time to be spent on my blog since the birth of my second child in January 2018 and focussed more on other social media platforms once again. My still belief is that I have got much more goodies from my social media presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as compared to the blog which means that I have won several contests giving me much bigger prizes as compared to the goodies gifted by PR companies and Brands at their launch events. But this post is to celebrate the overall crossing of three million page views on The Life's Way and what it means to me?

3 Million is just a number and I hope to reach 5 Million soon in some next years and I will continue to write the new articles and blog posts. I will also focus on shooting video blogs that will go on my Youtube Channel. If you have not followed me on the channel, kindly do so as I am still far from the first 1000 subscribers and just need around 228 new subscribers to reach that landmark. This can be done in a single day by my readers around the world. Kindly follow the link and subscribe to the TheLife'sWay Youtube channel, please. Your help will be greatly appreciated in this regard.
3 Million Pageviews on www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay
I would also like to mention what I have received in terms of goodies or media gift pack during all these years from all the brands I have supported on my blog posts -

1. Samsung South Africa - 139 Posts - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 (Won), Samsung Galaxy Buds Live (Gift), Samsung Powerbank 8700mAh (Gift), Samsung Launch Event trip to Cape Town for Note4, Samsung Launch Goodies - Snacks Packs (Gift), Samsung NX300 (Community Challenge Winner) Won, Samsung 65'' Curved UHD TV (Mission Samsung Grand Finale Winner) Won, Cape Town Trip for Grand Finale Mission Samsung

3. Montecasino, Johannesburg, South Africa - 85 Posts - I have shared so many posts for Montecasino and most of them are for the event tickets and never got any stay at any of their hotels or properties. I was recently again invited for their movie launch event where I won Tomato Watches and also some Coca-Cola goodies which I have made YouTube videos about.

4. Indiblogger - 83 Posts - I have participated in a lot of their contest where sometimes I won Flipkart vouchers, sometimes goodies were sent to us, some of the posts were for cash also and overall it was a joyous collaboration with this blogger network in India. I have bought a lot of stuff using those Flipkart vouchers for sure.

5. Disney South Africa - 68 Posts - Other than their annual showcase goodies along with movie tickets from time to time the gift packs includes generally some books, notepads, Mickey Mouse Volkano Bluetooth speaker and recently in 2021 time National Geographic Astrum Bluetooth Speakers which you can watch on Youtube channel.

6. Acer South Africa - 67 Posts - R500 gift voucher to buy stuff from Shop.acer.com (used thrice), Acer Launch goodies like Pen drive 8GB, Paper stand, Typo calculator, pens and diaries.
I have stopped sharing for Acer South Africa as I didn't get anything worthwhile sharing all their press releases and doing product reviews though I used to get invited to their local launch events and also some products to review.

7. Sony South Africa - 53 Posts - Sony MDR-XP450AP Extra-Bass Wired Earphones (Gift), Diary, Pen, Sony Xperia XA Ultra, Sony Xperia XZ Premium
My love for Sony products is such that I bought so many products in London along with my earlier collection of products that when I came back to India, the Indian Country Manager of the Sony Headphones division wanted to visit my home and gift me with a new product but that couldn't happen as I travelled to South Africa before he could plan a visit. Anyhow, it remains my favourite company as I have kept hold of my old portable e-Reader, old noise cancellation headphones along with various other Sony products from Cassette player to MP3 Players to Portable CD player. I will start showcasing them on my Youtube channel soon.

8. Silverstar Casino, Johannesburg, South Africa - 48 Posts - Silverstar Casino Marketing team provided me with a lot of staycations which I won during their several events and got to stay in their Presidential Suite also twice or thrice. I have got pen drives, Champagnes, Pens, Diaries, Casino vouchers, hotel stays, free movie tickets, Picnic sets, beach mats, Cheese cutter, Coffee maker and so many fun activities to be part of in terms of their event tickets. I am not getting invited anymore to their launch events but I have had a great run with the brand and I am so grateful to them.

9. SterKinekor South Africa - 39 Posts - Movie tickets mainly and some launch events.
Sterkinekor was the first company if I remember correctly to invite me to a movie night and gave my first goodies bag in South Africa which was a Diary and a Pen. I still have not used any of the items and kept them safe.

10. rAge Expo South Africa - 36 Posts - rAge Expo Tickets, rAge Expo media goodies like Lego blocks or some kind of other goodies like caps, t-shirts, carry bags from their sponsor like MSI Gaming etc.
It's always a pleasure to receive an invite to their expo which is a mad mad time to enjoy the best of the best games, memorabilia, gadgets and other technology-related products and goodies. I have been part of most of them since I came to South Africa and over the years the thing that remains with me is MSI  Lucky Dragon Bag which is a perfect fit to carry all the groceries and vegetables from the car to the home. All my 3 bags collected over the years are now at the end of the road and I need some new ones to carry on showcasing them in my shopping trolley.

11. ZEE South Africa - 28 Posts - No benefits at all other than 1 invite to go to Zee launch event in a Chauffer driven limousine which was an experience in itself. That's my only experience in life to sit inside a limousine.

12. LG South Africa - 25 Posts - Macaroons, Mobile Stand, Pendrive, LG X Screen, Mobile Photography Class at Vega

13. Lenovo South Africa - 24 Posts - Lenovo Pen drives, Diary, Pen, Customised Laptop Sleeve, Yoga mats, Tshirts full sleeves, Lenovo Wireless Mouse

14. Microsoft South Africa - 23 Posts - Pen drives, Poncho, Scarf, Brainstorm magazine, Pens, Invite to their CIO-CTO Event, Cap

15. Uber South Africa - 21 Posts - Tshirt, Discount voucher (never used), Mobile Stand

So these are the top 15 brands in terms of the number of posts done and some of them I have also marked as brands that just wanted free promotion and vanished once I asked for something in return so there are around 60+ posts belonging to those brands. So this is the current number of posts for all these brands and maybe or not there will be more for them or not depends on the respect I get in return for my time and efforts. Here I have not talked about the thousands of tweets, Facebook posts and Instagram posts for all these brands which come along with attending the event, or sharing blog posts or receiving the goodies. Overall, it's has been a great journey so far and I generally do publish the yearly posts too which you can read and enjoy too. Thanks to each and every pageviews reader to make it happen! Thank You!

Cheers!!!

#TheLifesWayReviews @SkullcandySA Inkd Wireless #Bluetooth Earphones #ProductReview

Hi Friends,

I bought Skullcandy Inkd Wireless Bluetooth Earphones from the Skullcandy store at rAge Expo and it was going for around R399 along with free sunglasses. I always wanted to test out the Bluetooth earphones from Skullcandy and also contacted their PR company but they never sent me anything and I only posted some of their posts for free. It's always the promises I receive from people and no real products.
#TheLifesWayReviews @SkullcandySA Inkd Wireless #Bluetooth Earphones #ProductReview
Skullcandy product range is for the younger generation and their products have deep bass built-in all their products as millennials love bass much more than treble. I earlier tried their Hesh headphones and bought a pair to gift one of my friends on their birthday. I also bought and still have Titan earphones with me which I have never used at all. Also, I won Skullcandy Lowrider in one of the contests in India but didn't like them much as I felt they are not original and still lying around in my drawer in India.
#TheLifesWayReviews @SkullcandySA Inkd Wireless #Bluetooth Earphones #ProductReview
Coming back to this beauty named Skullcandy Inkd Wireless which has a lightweight neckband design with Noise-isolating and 8 hours battery claimed on the package. I have never seen such a nice booklet to showcase the various functions available in these earphones. The package contains 2 silicone gel sets, charging cable, and the main earphones in the package.
#TheLifesWayReviews @SkullcandySA Inkd Wireless #Bluetooth Earphones #ProductReview
Pairing a new device is easy and if you press the main function button for 5 seconds, the device will be ready to pair with any BlueTooth smartphone. During the pairing mode, the light on the side will blink until it is paired. The main button can be pressed for 3 seconds to switch it On and Off. Volume Up and Down can be done using the + and - buttons whereas play and pause can be done by the main Skullcandy function button and can also be used to answer and end the call. If you press + or - for 3 seconds then you can move the track forward and backward. The design is such that the buttons are big enough to be pressed when wearing any kind of gloves too.

On the other side of the plastic housing has all kinds of technical stuff written which doesn't look good at all. Buttons are there on the left side of the casing and on the right-hand side, there is a Skullcandy Logo without any buttons whatsoever. On the left side only there is an opening to charge the earphones using micro-USB type B and you can charge them using any of your mobile chargers. The device can be fully charged in around 2 hours. It gives an audio output for around 4 to 5 hours initially and now after many years, I am getting around 2-3 hours of power-packed music performance.

The problem I faced with these R400 earphones is when I took them out for my daily walks the wind flow was creating some kinds of hissing sounds which were not desired and was a disturbance in my ears. This really brings me to the fact that these are really great for inside the office and home as I never faced any problems with the same in that territory. Skullcandy has already launched an upgraded version of these wireless earphones at around R100 extra and I am sure they will be great too but the market belongs to the dual independent wireless earbuds like Airpods and various other designs like those from various brands around the world.

The 17th Annual @Vodacom @rAgeExpo Brought Fans Another Year of Awesome! #17yearsofawesome

Hi Friends,

Vodacom rAge 2019 saw four days of setup, 69 solid hours of LAN gaming, an entire day to break down and many kilometers worth of fibre, network cable, power cables, and steps walked all over the Ticketpro Dome, as well as over 30,000 cold drinks and 1,635 kgs of chips consumed.

From robotics and other cutting-edge tech to celebrity appearances and action-packed esports tournaments, Vodacom rAge 2019 had it all. The atmosphere was electric (in some cases, literally), and like-minded fans from all over South Africa came through en masse to dress up, shop, play and take in the fantastic sights.

South Africa’s biggest annual video gaming, computer, technology, and geek culture exhibition once again transformed the Ticketpro Dome into a 17,483sqm galaxy of geek over the weekend of 27-29 September. With an increase in visitor numbers, 35 615 people found their happy place among the stands, stalls, and stages.

The creative genius of Artists’ Alley showcased its share of amazing South African creative talent, including Steampunk and cosplay fashion designer Sin-Bin, local author Chantelle Roberts, and one of SA’s international comic art sensations, Warren Louw.

There were many firsts for South African gaming and geek culture this year. The first-ever NAG LAN Super Pass was introduced, allowing 150 die-hard gamers early access on Thursday evening, before the rest of the LANners joined them early on Friday morning.

There was also an exclusive Streamers’ Zone – an online sharing hub for fans to broadcast up-to-the-minute video and content in streamer booths. For the younger members of the family, there was the vibrant Kidz Kage play area.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fans got to see South Africa’s CS:GO elite competing for a prize pool of R 150 000 and the ASUS ROG Invitational Trophy. Eight teams played their hearts out, but only one could emerge victoriously. And after one of the toughest challenges ever, Goliath Gaming walked away with the ultimate prize in front of a capacity crowd.
The 17th Annual @Vodacom @rAgeExpo Brought Fans Another Year of Awesome! #17yearsofawesome
For the first time ever, the World Robotic Olympiad (WRO) came to the expo and brought together some of the smartest young minds in the country, to show off their amazing brain power and problem-solving skills at the WRO robotics competition. Locally, five provincial events took place and the top-nine national qualifying teams who won across the different categories at Vodacom rAge this year will head off to compete at the WRO International in Hungary.

Over the last 17-years, the annual NAG LAN has become one of the most anticipated events at Vodacom rAge, and this year’s turnout to southern Africa’s largest BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer/Console) event once again proved that.

NAG LAN sponsors Nutanix, MWEB, Aruba and My Sky Networks made sure the NAG LAN was consistently connected and glitch-free. Collectively, 3,252 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive games were played for 2,925 hours, 1,838 DOTA games were played for a total of 2,281 hours and 645 Playerunknown’s Battleground games were played for 522 hours over the weekend.

Exhibitors at Vodacom rAge this year saw record attendance and sales at their stands.

Imran Sorathia, Managing Director, from premium computer and gaming supplier Evetech said, “It has always been an absolute pleasure to exhibit at the Vodacom rAge Expo. At Evetech, we pride ourselves on establishing relationships with our customers, not seeing them as just a ‘target audience’.

Vodacom rAge is the perfect opportunity for us to not only get a better understanding of what our customers enjoy but also to gain some insight into what they expect from us.

“Evetech made the decision not to sell any products at the Vodacom rAge Expo 2019, as we wanted to emphasize the real gaming experience, allowing people to test all the peripherals and to get a sense of what they enjoy using. It was a unique opportunity for customers to “try before they buy”, which is quite rare.”

Belinda Marais, Marketing Manager from Acer Predator commented, “Vodacom rAge Expo 2019 was every gamer’s dream! The energy was electric, and the gaming experiential stations were world-class. Predator will definitely be back next year!”

Cosplayers came out in full force to show off their impressive and detailed costumes on the Cosplay Stage and in Sunday’s Cosplay Parade. The Best In Show for the Vodacom 4U Cosplay Contest this year went to Maoukami Cosplay who cosplayed as Katsuki Bakugou (My Hero Academia).

Overall, the Vodacom rAge Expo 2019 was a colossal success, with gamers, geeks, cosplayers, fans and supporters going large at the Ticketpro Dome this year. Vodacom rAge is going strong and the organizers are looking forward to another great expo next year.

Thank you to Vodacom and all the sponsors and exhibitors for their part in Vodacom rAge’s #17yearsofawesome.

Cheers!!!

A Memoir - This Month Last Year - Apr 2018 www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay

Hi Friends,

April last year was a month full of new product launches and amazing new events to attend and visit too. Avengers was the talk of the season and Game of Thrones was being missed in April 2018. This year though is one of the best as Game of Thrones is back with its last run along with Avengers: Endgame breaking all movies records along with some great sporting events in sight and IPL 2019 in full run along with Rand Show 2019 as well as Indian Elections to choose the new Prime Minister. This month was kind of big for me as I won myself my first Instax Camera at their SQ20 launch event social media challenge.

1. Avengers: Infinity War Breaks Records #SouthAfrica @Disney @Marvel #AvengersInfinityWar - http://www.thelifesway.com/2018/04/avengers-infinity-war-breaks-records.html - Avengers Infinity War an awesome watch at the Mall of Africa, though the pizza at Pizza Hut was very bad and uncooked. It kept me dizzy throughout the movie that day with an upset stomach even though I just had 2 pieces out of 8 in the large pizza. What I have observed over the year since that time, Pizza Hut is not consistent in their pizza making, sometimes it's too good and sometimes it's pathetic. It happens alternately and I don't know whether I shall keep going there or change to some other pizza makers.

2. @HuaweiZA Reveals The Future of Smartphone AI Photography #HuaweiP20pro #SeeMooore - http://www.thelifesway.com/2018/04/huaweiza-reveals-future-of-smartphone.html - Huawei makes awesome camera smartphones and I have been a fan since the time I saw P8 but as it happens, I only got to use the P20 Pro as my day to day smartphone. This phone is amazing and I am totally in love with the same. Even Huawei recognized me as their Top Photographer for January 2019. Check out some of the photographs taken using the same on my Instagram channel @araijain
A Memoir - This Month Last Year - Apr 2018 www.thelifesway.com #TheLifesWay
3. Your License To @rAgeExpo Goes on Sale Soon #rAgeExpo2018 - http://www.thelifesway.com/2018/04/your-license-to-rageexpo-goes-on-sale.html - rAge Expo is something which I love to visit since the first year I came to Johannesburg in 2013. Last year in 2018, I won myself an MSI Gaming Keyboard which came along with Lucky Mascot Toy too. I really loved the same and at the event, I got Pixel Pals from @ChaniZA in one of her giveaways at the show. What I have observed is that you shall visit the show on both the first day and the last day for sure.

4. 12 Days To www.TheLifesWay.com 5th Birthday Celebrations #5YearsofTheLifesWay #27Dec2017 #Pride - http://www.thelifesway.com/2018/04/12-days-to-wwwthelifeswaycom-5th.html - It shows how difficult is to write your own book and how long does it take to tell a story, so if George R Martin is taking time to release his next novel in 'A song of Fire and Ice' series it's understandable. My 30 days post was still left with 11 posts in the month of April 2018 and I don't think I will ever take this series ever again till I am a regular writer of the blog posts. I am working on the same now with one step at a time or one post at a time.

5. @DEFY_SA Believes In Better For #SouthAfrica #FutureLegends #FCBarcelona - http://www.thelifesway.com/2018/04/defysa-believes-in-better-for.html - Defy launched their new products and new association with Football Club Barcelone to choose some players out of South Africa and train them too. I am not aware of the final participants and where are they now. All these programs are good for the community to give them hope but shall take the person to a certain stage in life.

Let's see who wins the elections in India and in South Africa. The world will book their seats for Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and let's see how India and South Africa performs this time and I sincerely hope one of them will win the same.

Cheers!!!

#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo

Hi Friends,

rAge 2018 saw 34,002 people pass through the doors of the Ticketpro Dome to witness an unrivaled spectacle of exquisite cosplay, fantastic games, and only the freshest geek culture memorabilia. Most importantly, rAge 2018 was the testament to the fact that gaming, cosplay, and tech are at the heart of a well-loved and ever-growing culture in South Africa.

That culture is also renowned for chewing through tremendous amounts of bandwidth! MWeb provided an 8Gbps line to the expo and recorded a whopping 120TB in downloads and 15Tb in uploads – an absolutely astounding amount of data.

A quick look at the statistics for this year’s expo tells a story about this passionate, enthusiastic community. Anyone who took the time to head on over to rAge would’ve quickly found themselves immersed in nothing but warmth and dedication – not to mention the incredible tech and gaming merch on display.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
“The floor plan was dramatically changed to allow for more breathing room. The LAN was repositioned, and by all accounts, this went down well with our dedicated gamers and fans. We hosted a few large-scale casual esports tournaments that saw permanent queues the entire weekend, as well as some very happy winners,” commented Michael James, Senior Project Manager, and owner of rAge.

“While figures were down slightly, this is something we anticipated as a result of new market entries such as Comic-Con playing in the same space so close to our dates. Everything considered though, the impact on rAge was negligible,” concludes James.

rAge is a place where people can come together and celebrate their mutual love of virtual adventure and outlandish fantasy, of worlds beyond our own that we’d otherwise never get the chance to experience. This is a community that celebrates its geekiness, and rAge is proud to provide a place for everyone to share in the revelry.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
A prime example would be the scenario that unfolded at the Cosplay Skit Show, when Maoukami Cosplay proposed – on stage – to Chiaki Riku, to raucous cheers from the crowd!

More than 500 accredited media personnel attended the expo this year, acknowledging the fact that interest in this sphere is growing exponentially. There were more than 30 new and pre-released games on the show between the numerous stands, as well as a veritable menagerie of gaming mementos that made for a collector’s utopia.

Many retailers reported selling out of stock on the first day and having to restock for the rest of the weekend. And that’s despite the fact that we’re technically in a recession.

The PlayStation stand was a roaring success – which is no surprise when you consider all the FIFA 19 action they had to offer. Over 1,200 players registered to compete in The PlayStation Cup visitor’s competition, and the winners walked away with some amazing rewards. PlayStation really took things to new heights with their stand for Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was designed to resemble a miniature version of New York’s iconic skyline.
#rAgeExpo2018 Spreads The Love, Does The Things @rAgeExpo
Xbox brought their A-game, with an astounding 98 Xboxes on their stand for visitors to play on, showing off titles like the brand-new Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Forza Horizon 4, alongside many others. Assassin’s Creed, in particular, proved immensely popular with visitors. Xbox’s Fortnite Festival saw an overwhelming 1,845 visitors competing over the course of three days, once again proving the game’s seemingly endless allure.

Another highlight for the weekend was the home-coded stand, where local developers showcased their games to the public, some for the very first time. South African developer Robot Wizard’s Boet Fighter, was shown off to many eager boitjies and binnets at its demo launch. The game is a tongue-in-cheek reflection of the urban nightlife of Jo’burg, and in the words of the developers, gamers came to “klap those buttons like an MMA boet attacking a bus”. It’s a fantastic confirmation of South Africa’s ability to develop software that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international titles.

Twitter blew up throughout rAge, with #rAgeexpo2018 trending for the entire weekend. Facebook and Instagram were also inundated with interest in the expo, garnering thousands of posts between them – including a stunning array of some of the finest cosplay this side of the Atlantic. The Table Realms app (a locally-developed platform via which you can play games on any device) trended at number 1 on the Google Play store over the weekend thanks to its presence at rAge.

Now let’s talk hauls. Attendees walked away with enough loot to put Blackbeard to shame. Hundreds of thousands of rands worth of prizes were given away. Memorabilia, mementos, cards, caps, figurines, tech, and a whole bunch more traded hands, ensuring most expo-goers left the show with heavy bags of free stuff.

rAge 2018 was something special. It once again offered a welcoming space for South Africa’s community of geeks to share their appetite for their favorite characters, games, rigs, software, hardware and meticulously-made costumes (which sometimes looked better than the originals). But just as importantly, rAge 2018’s numbers prove that this is an expanding arena in our country.

Stay tuned for rAge 2019, which is happening from 27 to 29 September 2019.

Cheers!!!
