SA businesses embrace GenAI – but strategy and skills lagging, finds 2025 Roadmap

South African enterprises are rapidly integrating Generative AI (GenAI) into their operations, but most are doing so without formal strategies, dedicated leadership, or the infrastructure required to maximise value and minimise risk.

This is the key finding of the newly released South African Generative AI Roadmap 2025, based on a study by World Wide Worx in collaboration with Dell Technologies and Intel.

The report, which surveys over 100 mid-sized and large enterprises across industry sectors, shows that GenAI adoption has climbed from 45% of large enterprises in 2024 to 67% in 2025.

This dramatic rise positions GenAI as the fastest-moving digital trend in the country. However, in a rush to adopt the fast-growing technology, there is a need for organisations to take the foundational steps of planning and governance. Doing so will more clearly connect AI to people and processes and help organisations reap genuine, sustaining ROI.

“Many organisations are simply unaware of the gaps they’re leaving in their systems,” says Arthur Goldstuck, CEO of World Wide Worx and principal analyst of the study. “The risk goes beyond the technical, and includes reputational, ethical, and operational vulnerability. While the first step of technology adoption is well underway, our survey demonstrates there is room for operational growth.”

According to the report’s findings, AI adoption has brought clear benefits to the organisations using it:

• 86% of GenAI users cite increased competitiveness as a result of using AI tools.
• 83% report improved productivity.
• 66% see enhanced customer service.

Yet, behind these numbers lies an operational gap:

• Only 14% of organisations have a formal company-wide GenAI strategy.
• Just 13% have implemented governance or ethical frameworks in the form of guardrails for safety, privacy and bias mitigation.
• 39% cite high implementation cost as the primary barrier to GenAI adoption

AI maturity requires foundations

“The roadmap aims to help guide stakeholders to fully understand the scope of GenAI, and to build transparent strategies that deliver on its promise without placing enterprises at risk,” says Goldstuck. “What’s most startling is that many companies think using a GenAI tool is the same as having an AI strategy.”

As companies race to embed GenAI tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT into business functions, most are overlooking deeper transformation through infrastructure, skills and internal capability. Holistic AI infrastructure, combined with people and processes, is critical to scaling AI deployments and clearly connecting them to tangible return on investment.

Shadow AI

The report raises the alarm about “shadow AI” – the unsanctioned use of GenAI by employees without oversight. Currently:

• 32% of businesses report informal or unregulated GenAI use.
• A further 20% report a mix of official and unofficial GenAI use.
• 84% say oversight is an important or very important success factor for GenAI deployment.

Critical governance measures include clear principles for oversight, accountability, and responsible use. It enables organisations to build trust, reduce risk, and drive long-term value.

“The current use of GenAI is largely taking place in a regulatory and ethical vacuum,” Goldstuck warns. “The longer this continues, the more harm can be caused to both businesses and individuals before these guardrails are in place.

“Without governance, organisations are walking blindfolded into a future shaped by AI. That might be exciting, but it is not sustainable.”

The roadmap also identifies two areas of opportunity:

• Business and Societal impact: Over 75% of respondents have no measures in place to monitor or reduce the energy use and footprint of GenAI.
• Skills development: A massive 87% of businesses have committed to GenAI upskilling or training of employees.

The report cautions that South Africa could find itself divided by the ability to use GenAI wisely and scale deployments as the technology matures.

Goldstuck says: “There’s a real risk of a GenAI disconnect in South Africa between those who use GenAI deliberately, strategically and ethically, and those who use it blindly or not at all.”

According to IDC, the global quantum computing market is projected to reach $8.9 billion by 2028, highlighting the increasing demand for quantum-enhanced solutions. But what does this mean for businesses today, and how can they begin leveraging this emerging synergy?

Quantum computing: The promise is real, but so are the challenges

Quantum computing isn’t just about scientific theory anymore. It’s already being tested and applied in some of the most demanding industries. Its unparalleled ability to evaluate multiple possibilities simultaneously makes it an ideal choice for specific domains, from accelerating drug discovery to enabling faster financial risk modelling. What makes it powerful is its ability to consider many possibilities at once, making it ideal for problems that involve many variables and outcomes.

But today’s quantum machines are still in their early stages of development, characterised by limited qubit counts and relatively low fidelity rates. Systems will require significant improvement to achieve practical applications. Additionally, the control mechanisms required to implement instructions are prone to errors due to the intricate interplay of quantum phenomena, making it challenging to maintain coherence and accuracy. The complexity of quantum algorithms and the need for extensive error correction tools make it challenging to scale up qubit counts and improve overall computational power.

Moreover, the quantum computers’ limited capabilities in solving optimisation problems and machine learning tasks, which are critical applications in many fields, highlight the pressing need for HQCC approaches that can leverage the strengths of both paradigms. By combining the power of quantum processors with the stability and reliability of classical systems, HQCC offers the best of both worlds.

Preparing for quantum: How businesses can start today

It’s important to understand that HQCC isn’t an alternative to current High Performance Computing (HPC) operations, but an enhancement. Despite its potential, HQCC comes with some critical hurdles that need to be addressed, such as software interoperability, shortage of talent and evolving hardware advancements. Keeping that in mind, businesses that start exploring hybrid solutions now will be better positioned as quantum capabilities advance.

Here's a simple three-step approach to get started:

1. Discover: Begin with learning and experimentation. Quantum computing is an emerging field, so the first stage of preparing your business is to do some foundational research. Once you’re ready to experiment, consider using emulation for developing, porting and optimising code for quantum computing on a classical infrastructure, avoiding major upfront costs.

2. Identify: Not every problem is suited to quantum. You wouldn’t want to use it to do any kind of calculation that has one exact answer. For example, you shouldn’t use it to calculate your tax bill or process your payroll. On the other hand, it can be very good at solving optimisation problems. The key is to look for situations that are difficult to model because of a large number of variables. You also want use cases that are intrinsic to your business, where improving operations would have a large impact on your bottom line.

3. Deploy: Enable frictionless deployment into production and real business benefits. HQCC offers a flexible approach to deploying quantum computing solutions into production. By combining classical processing with the power of quantum computing, Hybrid Quantum-Classical Systems (HQCS) enable developers to create and test quantum algorithms in a familiar classical environment before deploying them on expensive quantum hardware. That means you can achieve frictionless deployment into production, accelerating your entry into the quantum computing era while minimising the risks of adopting a new technology.

The intersection of HQCC and AI

AI and quantum computing are increasingly converging. As AI models become more complex and classical systems begin to hit performance and energy limits, the potential for hybrid technologies like HQCC, which combines the capabilities of both AI and quantum, is immense.

AI enhances quantum computing by:

• Optimising workloads: AI can intelligently allocate tasks between classical and quantum processors.
• Improving algorithm efficiency: AI can refine quantum algorithms to run more efficiently on quantum hardware.
• Accelerating development: AI enables progress in quantum computing without relying on dedicated quantum hardware.

In turn, HQCC can advance AI by:

• Providing unparalleled compute power: Quantum computers can handle complex computations that classical systems struggle with, enabling AI models to scale in domains such as material science and drug discovery.
• Offering increased energy efficiency: By leveraging both classical and quantum processing, HQCC can deliver improved energy efficiency for AI tasks.

Stationery Review 263 - Kaweco LILIPUT Fountain Pen – Black (USD 33)

Hi Friends,

I bought a Kaweco Liliput after my brother wanted to have my Kaweco Sport Brass Fountain Pen, which he really loved, on my recent trip to the USA. I took a Cross fountain pen for him, but he didn't like that one. So to give him a full-fledged experience of owning a Kaweco pen, I bought this pen, which was the cheapest at Amazon.com and gave the tin case to him to keep his Kaweco Brass in the case. This is really a very small fountain pen, and I was amazed to see it for the first time when I got it. Never imagined it to be so small. Check it out! 

Kaweco Liliput is a pen that keeps getting launched in different avatars in Stainless Steel, Brass, Silver, Fireblue, Black, Copper, Kolibri and Blue. I am sure the first time people look at this pen, they will fall in love with the beauty of this design. It reminds me of the nostalgic feeling of machine-created crafts in writing instruments.

Stationery Review 262 - Caran d'ache 849 Ballpoint Pen Nespresso India Green (GBP 18)

Hi Friends,

I always wanted to buy this Caran d'ache 849 ball point pen since I first saw the same. I bought the same in one of the sales from Cult Pens UK and brought it here. This is a nice Nespresso India Green Limited Edition that I really loved, as this is made from the aluminium used in the capsules. Check it out!

Caran d'ache 849 is really a famous pen that comes in thousands of different body designs, though the refill remains the same as Goliath, which can write 8000 meters in one recharge. This is the longest I have ever heard a jotter refill can go in any pen from any brand. This pen has been collaborated with a lot of brands to give them as a gift to many of their customers. I really loved this one and always wanted to have one, and this one I got when Cult Pens had it on special or with discounts. The price of this pen in South Africa is around ZAR 595 at takealot.com, but it's the regular body designs that are cheaper. The special designer editions can go for more than ZAR 8000 as well and start from much more than ZAR 595.

Stationery Review 261 - Kaweco Collection Iridescent Pearl Fountain Pen (GBP 21)

Hi Friends,

I bought this particular colour despite all the colours that are available from Kaweco. The pearl's shine attracted me towards the same. I didn't get it anywhere in South Africa but found it on Cult Pens, UK website and ordered it immediately. Check it out!

This is really a lightweight pen with an acrylic body design. The shine is really pearlish and comes with an ink cartridge in blue coloured ink. I also got 6 ink cartridges for free when I ordered it and chose Smokey Grey. This is a coloured ink that you buy with lots of hopes, but always get disappointed because you can use pencils directly rather than the pen. The nib choices in the Kaweco range are from Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad and Extra Broad.

Stationery Review 260 - Parker 51 Mechanical Pencil

Hi Friends, 

I bought this Parker 51 Mechanical Pencil that I had wanted for so long. This is a great design, one with a gold-plated cap and clip. I bought this from an auction for ZAR 700. Check it out! 

This is what we can call luxury by being gold plated with an even number to represent the batch and date, etc, to check on the validity of the same. This is really a great, balanced pencil that I am definitely keeping in my collection of writing instruments. I should name my collection something like lekhni or kalam or something on those lines!

Stationery Review 258 - Busby Leather Journal & Cover

Hi Friends,

I bought this Busby Leather Journal and Cover from Facebook Marketplace as I love using leather journals, and this one attracted me a lot. Check it out!

The Busby Leather journal feels good and has this unusual design, which looks really like the lines on your hands. This has a lock mechanism to close the journal as well, along with the wire set by which you can put your own pages inside the cover. I have also inserted a Rhodia Notepad inside so as to carry it wherever I want.
