#Springs School Awarded With R1.4 MILLION #Sports Facility @SteersSA #LetsPlay

Hi Friends,

Champions of the Supersport Let’s Play Challenge 2017, Jan Van Riebeeck Primary School were presented with a multi-purpose sports facility in Springs, on Friday the 2nd March courtesy of brands such as Steers which has encapsulated what it means to pay it forward by proudly supporting the initiative for the past two years.

STEERS, a brand that is passionate about youth development and nutritional awareness, identifies the Let’s play Challenge as a natural fit to encourage the youth to engage in physical activities from an early age as well as to ensure that those with a passion are supported by this platform providing resources that would have been a mission to obtain for children in communities. Without fail, the brand has shown their full support and have yet again committed to doing all they can for the initiative which encourages the sustainability in the development of physical and mental fitness through sports education, as this aligns with their support that is also seen in Varsity Sports in a bid for the further development of young sporting talent.

The R1.4 Million multipurpose sports facility was awarded to Jan Van Riebeeck primary school who faced stiff competition from schools across the country to emerge as the champions of the 2017 edition of the annual Let’s Play Physical Challenge. The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders which included the Department of Basic Education, Sports and recreation, the Physical Education Institute of South Africa, UNICEF SA and Hitachi.

“Children are faced with many negative influences due to a lack of social engagement and opportunities for play. This sports facility can make a significant difference in lifestyle and behavior change and provide both hope and purpose to the children of this community,” said Vaughn Bishop, Head of Let’s Play. “We believe that this is a meaningful way to get schools involved in physical activity, particularly as the government has highlighted the need for children to become more active. Kids needn’t be superstars; the challenge is designed to accommodate everyone at the primary school level.”

The multi-purpose sports court makes provision for five sporting codes, including 5 a side soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball, and tennis in a bid to drive the development of sports and healthy activities in and around the surrounding communities. “The learners from our school perform moderately well academically and the school has a well-driven sport and cultural program. Sports participation includes netball, soccer, rugby, cricket, and swimming. Our trophy cabinet boasts of accolades for most of these activities. Winning 2017 Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge was truly the cherry on top of a very successful year for our learners’’, said the school Principal Mr. Herman Flemming.

With the vision of fully helping the school children become productive and successful in their lives, " We are very excited to have become this close with the initiative, as we aim to change how education is viewed and what children link it with” as stated by Adolf Fourie: Steers Marketing Executive. This year we present to Laerskool Jan Van Riebeeck a fully equipped sports court, that is not only for the school but built for the community.

This year’s Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge will engage with more than 500 Primary schools, increasing the participation to that of last year. STEERS encapsulates what it means to pay forward by supporting the Let’s Play Initiative by ultimately providing a resource that would have been a mission to obtain.
