Dreams Come True with @SilverstarZA and @947 #CSR @TsogoSun

Hi Guys,

For Sharné Geldenhuys, an 18 year-old Matriculant from Krugersdorp, 2016 has been a year of change. An A-grade student from Potchefstroom Girls High School, Sharné was not only able to complete her final year of formal schooling with excellent marks, but for the first time in her life, she didn’t have to worry about “adult stresses”, like whether her parents would be able to put food on the table.

Sharné and her family received some much needed respite when three of her school friends contacted 947’s Breakfast Xpress on her behalf. Pleading Sharné’s cause, the girls’ wish for their friend was simply that she could enjoy being a teenager, and live a normal, carefree life. As part of 947’s Christmas Wish initiative of December 2015, and with the help of Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manger from Silverstar Casino, one year later, Sharné and her family are living proof that wishes do come true.

In 2016, Shane, on behalf of Silverstar, paid Sharné’s school and boarding fees, her family received R3000 per month towards groceries and she received R2000 per month to buy whatever she wanted to for an entire year. As an added catapult into greatness, Shane personally offered one-on-one mentoring and coaching to Sharné, which will kick off in January 2017.

One year on, and Sharné hasn’t just excelled in school like everyone expected her to, but she has also made decisions - well beyond her years - which will have an impact on her and her family’s future. Testament of the responsible, grateful and humble person that Sharné is, she saved a portion of her “pocket money” and paid a deposit at The Travel and Tourism College in Randburg where she will be studying Tourism and Marketing Management come February 2017. She also paid for her driver’s licence this year, which means travelling from Krugersdorp to Randburg every day will not be a problem.

When asked what this year meant for her and her family, Sharné bubbled over with gratitude, “I didn’t once have to stress about asking my parents for money, and I could look after myself and buy all my essentials with the allowance Uncle Shane gave me. I was also able to save up for my Matric Farewell, a night which I will never forget. My dress was so beautiful and I had the best time with my friends!” she says.

“Because of the stress-free environment, my relationship with my parents has also improved so much. Even though my mom was diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis due to all the constant pressure, we have been able to support and truly be there for one another. My life will never be the same, and I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough.”

True to her hardworking and eager-to-learn nature, Sharné also volunteered some of her spare time to go and work at Silverstar during the course of the year, often job-shadowing or helping Shane and his marketing team with launches and activations at the casino. This is something which she did purely because she is keen to learn about the industry which she will be working in after she completes her studies in 2018.

Commenting on Sharné’s successes of 2016, Shane said the following, “We couldn’t be prouder of the tremendous growth, positivity and determination which Sharné displayed this year. I am confident that she will go from strength to strength not only in her chosen career path, but also on a personal level once we start with our mentoring and coaching sessions. The sky is the limit for this young girl, and I feel both honoured and excited to walk this road with her.”

“If there’s one thing 2016 has taught me, is that hard work and appreciating what you have in life really does go a long way,” concludes Sharné. “I am excited about my future! I can’t wait to start studying, working hard, and making a success of my life. I also cannot wait for my mentorship sessions with Uncle Shane – he has accomplished so much in his life, and I have a lot to learn from his experiences. I know I will never be able to repay what has been done for me and my family, but I hope I can show, through hard work and determination, just how much I appreciate everything.”
